Pain medication

How much is too much?

What I mean is I have been taking lortabs and ibuprofen for ten straight days after getting my wisdom teeth out.

Days 1-6: I was probably taking 8 lortabs a day
Days 7-10: I've been taking 2 lortabs and probably 8-12 ibuprofen.

I try to go as long as possible without taking any but sometimes the pain in my mouth/teeth/jaw is too much.

I think my dentist may have messed up taking my wisdom teeth out or filling my cavities.

1200 Mg ibuprofen a day is more than sufficient. You probably have dry sockets. If you take too much ibuprofen you'll jack up your stomach and your liver. You don't want that at all.

Like Phobia said, you must have dry sockets. You shouldn't be feeling that much pain at this point. I'm not sure that I took any significant pain medication beyond the first couple of days after my wisdom teeth came out.

Yeah, I don't think I took any pain meds after the first day.

What are you concerned about, dependency? I'm not familiar with Lortabs, but I took Oxycodone and Hydrocodone for 3 months straight last winter and didn't really have much trouble stopping them.

The Ibuprofen are 200mg. I guess I'm taking probably 1600mg's a day.

I went to my dentist last wednesday because of the pain and he told me everything was healing fine and I didn't have dry sockets. I'd say the pain is worse then it was during the first couple days.

Dependency is the least of his worries. If he damages his liver he'll never take ibuprofen again - and a host of other pain relievers. One of my buds used to be a RB for Mizzou and he screwed up his liver so bad he can't take one ibuprofen.

I'm not concerned with being dependent. I'd love to stop taking them but like I said, the pain gets rather intense at times.

I'm guessing the pain in my mouth/jaw is giving me headaches also?

Erm....how much ibuprofen can one take before damaging one's liver? I live on that stuff.

If you have that much pain you either have dry sockets or your dentist jacked something up. If you don't have dry sockets then I'm worried for you. Time for a second opinion?

That's what a couple of my older friends are saying. I'm going to go back tomorrow and if he doesn't tell me why there's so much pain I'm going to go elsewhere.

You should PM tooge a link to this thread, see if he's willing to offer a professional opinion.

I don't know. I couldn't find a precise amount online. I've always been told no more than 3 200's at a time spaced at 8 hours per dosage - so 1200 per day.

My wife's teeth hurt for at least two weeks after she got hers taken out. Different people react in different ways.

And ditto on PMing tooge. No better source of advice than a professional.

Were you awake when they did it?

When i had mine out, i couldn't afford and wasn't covered for a trip to the orthodontist so i had the dentist do it. He gave me novacaine and the laughing gas and that's it.

Basically cut around and broke the teeth and pulled them out 2 went ok and 2 were pretty tough to get out.

I had 2 days that were not very fun and the next 2-3 got better everyday and was back to complete normal within a week.

Good luck and don't be affraid of the 2nd opp as others have said.
