2000 yards?

It used to be if a RB ran for a 1000 yards-that was a benchmark for a great player and an important milestone. This year there might end up being 10 to 15 players over a 1000 yards. Most of the good ones average 5 yards a cary now. The run defenses in the NFL are a joke.

So is 2000 yards the new benchmark, or maybe even 2500 yards??

I would say 1600 should be the new benchmark. Averaging 100 yards per game would be a safe standard with RBs these days. It is too easy to claim the "1000 yard rusher" now days. Hell, LJ did it in 13 weeks with only 5 starts. Go figure.

Maybe 1500 to make it sound achievable

Alexander has a shot at 2000- LT 1500-1600 Edge-1800 Hell even LJ 1500-1600-especially if he racks up 200 against Dallas.

1,000 yards in a season is only 62.5 yards a game.

2,000 yards is 125 yards a game.

1500 yards is 93.75 yards a game.

and so on. 1500 is about right. 1600 isnt much of a difference.

A good line, staying healthy, and having a coach that believes in the run helps a whole lot. Having a passing game like the Edge has takes the heat off the RB too.

I think the blocking rules have changed a bit and some things that used to be holding are now legal. I also think that because of the PI rules the field is opened up a little more which also aids the run game. I also think that their are alot of good RBs in the league right now. The game is geared toward offense.

RB's are getting stronger and blocking is better. Many different ways to run a run play now.

Going from 12 to 14 to 16 games in a season made a huge difference also. I can't stand hearing about the 1000 yard rusher anymore. That is not a difficult standard to achieve for a starting HB.

I agree with the above posts. The 1000 yard mark was set as the standard for a great running back when there were fewer games and the season was much shorter then it is now.

I agree that 1000 yards isnt alot, then again, I can remember how many years of Martyball that we couldn't manage a 1000 yard runner. Greg Hill would love to have 1000 yards in a year.
