A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:

No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

no spoilers. The books don't ever mention music as a for-boarding vehicle to promote drama.

If I remember right, the Rains of Castemere was about the destruction of a competing house by the Lannisters. So my interpretation was that the song's playing there was emblematic of the Lannister House's self-destruction during the last few minutes of the trial that we'd just seen. Thought it was pretty ingenious.

(I should probably add that there's no spoiler there, I'm just referring to the events of the trial as they were portrayed Sunday, Lannister plotting/turning against Lannister...)

Yes, "Rains of Castamere" is a song arising out of the destruction of House Reyne, Castamere being their ancestral home (like Winterfell is to the Starks).

They rose up in rebellion against the Lannisters after young Tywin's father had died. Tywin taught them that the Lannisters, who had declined under his father, were under new leadership, and his grisly destruction of the entire house of Reyne stood as a testament to that fact.

The song, not originally written "FOR" the Lannisters, became their unofficial theme song, with the tacit approval of the family, who didn't mind having a semi-official reminder of the consequences of rising against them.

The above is the book version of things. I have no idea if it has been discussed in the TV series, but by now it certainly should have been. I'm only through season 2 of the show at this point.

That would have been a big tip off before the Red wedding. Thats what alerted Catelyn. Now we know why. Seems like a bad idea to play that song right before you are going to surprise another family with a massacre.

The song had been in the show several times before the Red Wedding, mostly subtly. Except for this (can't be embedded):

Cersi told Marjorie about the song and what happened when she first came to Kings Landing. She then insinuated that she would demolish Marjorie's family the same way if they tried to rise up against them.

You have to wonder how much of that venom in the trial scene came from real life. "I'm on trial for being a dwarf." It's not exactly like there are many roles available for a man like him... serious roles, anyway.

The fact that he's an amazing actor will open things up, though.

Dinklage is awesome. I'd like to buy him a beer.

I read in an interview that he went through a time when he was really angry about his height, but he deals with it much better now. Apparently.

Now, he's getting roles that aren't necessarily written for someone that short - like Bolivar Trask in the new X-Men movie, for example.
