@smartfootball .@theBGrass Chan Gailey made a half hearted effort to use the pistol formation; he did not use Ault's offense as is being done now. @smartfootball @theBGrass I considered addressing that misconception in the article but cut it for space. Didn't catch on b/c he didn't do anything with it |

Well, I mean, there's the FORMATION, and then there's what people tend to do with it, I guess. I just don't see running a lot of designed QB runs with Geno Smith in the NFL.

The formation is basically custom-tailored to run the read option. While most people use it to read the defense to decide whether to hand off to the RB or run with the QB, there's no reason you can't just remove the QB run and replace it with a different post-read option that is a pass.
