Arrowhead Report: Jackson Wants To Keep Showing Up

Tyson Jackson’s first game of the season is one he’d rather forget. He’s second showed improvement. His third distinctly better than the previous two and last week’s performance vs. Minnesota perhaps one of his best as a pro.

Against the Vikings, Jackson single-handedly forced a sack that Tamba Hali was able to clean up and got his hand on a pivotal pass late in the fourth quarter. He also played a major role in limiting Adrian Peterson to just 3.5 yards per carry.

“Yeah, I did pretty well here and there,” Jackson said of his Week Four performance. “I still have a long way to go. I mean, I can see my game improving but at the same time I have a lot of small things to get better at. It can be fixable. I just have to continue to go out there and work hard to correct it.”

Hand placement and footwork rank high on the list of items defensive line coach Anthony Pleasant would like to see Jackson improve upon.

Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel has also noted the improvements and Jackson’s playing time has increased as a result of his play. Jackson has played the second-most snaps of any defensive linemen on the team, trailing Glenn Dorsey by just 15 snaps.

“I think he’s becoming more comfortable in the technique and what he’s doing,” Crennel said. “I think he’s more comfortable with his body and what his body can do. As a result of it, he’s becoming more active. He’s moving around better, he’s transitioning from run to pass rush better, so all of those things are positive.”

Jackson’s stat-line remains somewhat anonymous (10 tackles, one pressure and two passes defensed), but he’s effectively doing what the Chiefs are asking.

“He’s not going to be Dwight Freeney,” Crennel said. “You can forget about that. But, I think he can be very good for our team and the way we play. I think if he continues to get better he’ll be a big help for us.”

Effective play for Jackson means controlling offensive linemen and freeing the linebackers to make plays. It’s not a glamorous role, but it’s mandatory in order for the Chiefs defense to be successful.

“(Pass rush) is not his skill set,” Crennel said. “But, with his skills and how we play defense, he fits very well into our system and our program.”

Seeking Run Game Continuity

Averaging 110.8 rushing yards per game, the Chiefs aren’t the NFL’s top rushing offense. They currently rank 14th overall in that category.

Regardless of a season-ending injury to All-Pro RB Jamaal Charles and an otherwise slow start to the season, last year’s top-ranked rushing offense still wants to run the football with authority.

“I’m not necessarily talking about big plays, but we just have to get some success,” offensive coordinator Bill Muir said. “We need some continuity, some continuation. Maybe its two four or five-yard gains for a first down. I think that will make a big difference.”

The Chiefs found rushing success in chunks, but consistency eluded the offensive unit during the first quarter of the season.

Through four games, the Chiefs have executed 15 run plays of 10 yards or more. Those 15 runs have amounted to 226 yards for an average of 15.1 yards per attempt. It also means that the remaining rushing attempts of nine yards or less have generated just 2.4 yards per carry (90 attempts for 217 yards).

Muir would like to see more of the five and six-yard gains peppered between the longer runs.

“I think consistency is the word for a variety of reasons,” Muir said. “With the group that we have up front, I expect us to continue to get better.”

Jonathan Baldwin Physically Ready To Play

Physically, Jonathan Baldwin is ready to play football. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be part of the Chiefs 46-man active list Sunday in Indianapolis.

Baldwin went through a tryout of sorts this week, practicing fully for the first time this season and taking part in all team repetitions. His progress was watched closely throughout the week by head coach Todd Haley, offensive coordinator Bill Muir and wide receivers coach Richie Anderson.

“He has been working very hard, but he just hasn’t had a lot of action in a team setting,” Haley said. “There are a lot of factors at play, the least of which is his health. We feel good about that. That’s why he’s practicing and that’s why he’s working. It’s just a matter of making sure come Sunday we have the right 46 (players) active and we’re doing what is best for the team.”

Did Baldwin know where to align once he broke the huddle? Is he up to date with all of the offensive changes that have occurred since he last took the field in the preseason opener? Was his timing with QB Matt Cassel up to speed?

Those were some of the factors Chiefs coaches paid attention to throughout the week of practices and, by all accounts, it appears the staff walked away pleased with Baldwin’s progression.

“He’s physically and mentally ready to go,” Haley said.

“I’ll be real honest with you, what we saw this week was very encouraging,” Muir added.

Previously, Baldwin had been working individually with offensive quality control coach Nick Sirianni on a side field. Haley compared those one-on-one sessions to OTA-type practices the team conducts in the spring. Muir said the time spent with Sirianni helped improve Baldwin’s chances of joining the lineup.

Until Wednesday afternoon, the first-round draft pick hadn’t participated in a complete practice since injuring his thumb August 17th.

“I really feel (the work with Nick) benefitted him,” Haley said. “It’s just so hard for young receivers to get into the mix. They are worrying about so many different things – conditioning, breaking the huddle, lining up, motions, routes, all of those things, depths of routes. Those things he doesn’t have to think about.”

The Chiefs are officially listing Baldwin as probable for Sunday’s game, but the offensive staff will continue discussing its plans for the receiver through the weekend.

“It’s just a matter of making sure we are doing the right thing for the team and that we feel 100% that he is ready for the speed, tempo and those things,” Haley said.

“This guy has taken essentially every rep that we’ve taken for the last four or five weeks. It’s just been mostly on the other field. He’s now been able to get out there and started to be involved to where he’s actually involved in plays, both run and pass, and in special teams also.”

Earlier this week, Baldwin indicated he was willing to play whatever role asked to get on the field for the first time season.

“I just need to do everything I can to help the team,” Baldwin said. “That’s the main thing, do whatever the team asks me to do.”

Thomas jones has 39 carries with a 2.9 yard average.

I have stated that before and think it will happen.

The defense is coming around. Yea McNabb sucks but to hold AP to 85 yards or whatever it was is not a fluke.

We won last week. And we lost a real close one to San Diego because our QB, who is not Haley's mistake, was a useless piece of shit.

He doesn't have an overly talented team in the first place, has a piece of shit QB, and a really bad string of unbelievably big injuries. I'd say if the team continues to play the way they have the last 2 weeks, it will become ridiculously clear that this is a surprisingly decent team with an absolutely shitty Quarterback, and an even better team when we're fully healthy.

I'd say Haley's approach was the single biggest part of our rash of injuries and craptastic play to start the season.

We were unprepared, injured, and beat down the first 2 weeks. We'd been playing pat-a-cake all preseason and when the regular season started and we got hit in the mouth we went down like a bidge.

Poor coaching decisions (offensive play calling and stupid HC game management) only made a bad situation worse...
