QB Ricky Stanzi Iowa

Height: 6-4 3/8
Weight: 223
Speed: 4.93
Arm: 32
Hand: 10
Wingspan: 77 5/8
Birthdate: 09/03/1987
Hometown: Mentor, OH
Grade: 5.53

Notes: Also earned four letters in basketball as an Ohio prep. Redshirted in 2006. Arrested in May ’07 for underaged possession of alcohol. Saw very limited action in two games in ’07, recording just an interception in four pass attempts. In the fall, started 11-of-13 games (yielded starts to Jake Christensen against Maine and Pittsburgh) and completed 150-of-254 pass attempts (59.1 percent) for 1,956 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Started all 11 games in which he played in ’09, tossing 171-304-2,417-17-15 (56.3). Missed a pair of games after severely spraining his right ankle against Northwestern and undergoing surgery. Healthy in ’10, started all 13 games and totaled 221-345-3,004-25-6 (64.1). Sprained his left knee in the season opener. Team captain. Had a 26-9 career starting record.

Positives: Outstanding size with a compact, over-the-top delivery. Played in pro-style offense and is very comfortable operating from underneath center. Good footwork and delivery quickness. Has enough arm strength, and it has improved in recent years. Nice footwork. Athletic enough to sidestep the first wave of pressure. Smart, hardworking and is passionate about the game — is wired the right way, works at his craft and has earned the respect of his teammates. Very humble and quietly competitive. Will play through pain.

Negatives: Has a very lean build, is still underdeveloped physically and needs to spend more time in the weight room and get stronger. Does not drive the ball downfield — and some balls die with low RPMs. Can be flustered by pressure and forced into making bad throws. Does not read the whole field or see undercutting safeties — needs to hone his instincts and become more confident anticipating receivers coming open and pulling the trigger. Must improve field vision, anticipation and progression quickness. Could not come through in the clutch and close out tight contests vs. Arizona, Wisconsin and Northwestern when the game was on the line. Did not exude confidence at the Senior Bowl or show well.

Summary: An excellent-sized, pro-style passer who still needs to learn to trust his eyes and get the ball out on time, Stanzi has a strong base from which to develop and could blossom with quality coaching that feeds his confidence. Has appealing intangibles, leadership traits and work habits and most of his flaws are correctable. Has potential to develop into an eventual starter and draws some eerily similar semblance to a young Tom Brady.

NFL projection: Third- to fourth-round pick.

Not sold on his QB ability in the least bit. IA fans were sold on him early in his career, but lost faith in him late with his INT issues (Jr year) and mental lapses in his senior season. He's probably the most streaky QB I've ever watched in my life. Extremely hot and cold.

I don't project Stanzi as a starting QB ever, but a decent backup. Think a stronger Brodie Croyle without as good of collegiate career.

Truth. I've sat at games and watched Ricky do some very good things but we were always waiting for him to **** one up.
Great kid, I wish him the best and hope he tears it up. Great to see a Hawk QB in the league, hope he does better than the last one (Long).

Here's some perspective on my thoughts - I followed Chuck Long's career closely at Iowa. He finished 2nd in Heisman voting to Bo Jackson in the closest Heisman race in the history of the trophy. He was a first round pick of the Lions. He played on some awful Lions squads and eventually fell to 3rd string behind Andre Ware/Rodney Peete.

I have much higher NFL expectations of Stanzi than I ever had of Long despite the accolades and achievements of Long's Iowa teams. This is coming from a long-time Iowa fan who should have by rights been a huge optimist on behalf of Chuck Long. I guess my poorly-made point is that my amateur scouting scores Stanzi higher than Long which probably bodes pretty well for Stanzi if you buy into amateur scouting reports from idiots on a message board.

The Hawks put several QB's in the NFL in the early 90's.

Only one I can think of is Matt Rodgers. Were there others? Vlasic?

The CR Gazette describes the Hawk QB situation pretty well...

No National Football League quarterback of impact ever played that position at the University of Iowa.

Thirty-eight former Hawkeyes were in NFL training camps last summer and almost all of them spent the 2010 season in the league. None were quarterbacks.

No quarterback who finished his college career at Iowa has been an NFL draftee since Matt Rodgers in 1992, and he went in the 12th round. Drew Tate was Iowa’s starting quarterback from 2004 through 2006, is a backup quarterback in the Canadian Football League.

Kurt Warner of Cedar Rapids threw more touchdown passes in his first year as an NFL starter as all ex-Iowa quarterbacks did in their entire NFL careers. Combined.

So while Ricky Stanzi won’t be the first Iowa player taken in the 2011 draft, and his name certainly won’t be called Thursday night when only the first round is selected, his is the most interesting Hawkeye story this week.

No matter when Stanzi is drafted, the question will be if he is taken by a team that will have a logical scenario for one day having him as its starting QB. The ideal situation would seem to be a club with a proven veteran at that position, giving Stanzi two or three years to hone his pro skills and be equipped to start when the chance comes down the road.

It’s been floated by a few guessers that Stanzi might get grabbed by the New England Patriots, say with the 92nd pick of the draft in Round 3. That would give Stanzi ample time to learn from Tom Brady, (who turns 34 in August) before Brady rides off to do whatever retired matinee-idols married to supermodels do.

We’ll see. Things seldom go as expected after the first five or six picks of the draft.

But let’s backtrack to the paucity of Hawkeye quarterbacks in the NFL. This hasn’t been just a Kirk Ferentz-era thing, though Stanzi will be the first Iowa quarterback to get drafted in Ferentz’s 12 years as head coach. Even 2002 Heisman Trophy runner-up Brad Banks didn’t get taken by anyone.

The player who was the quarterback in Iowa’s only two Rose Bowl wins was the first pick in the NFL draft. College Football Hall of Famer Randy Duncan, a Heisman runner-up himself, was picked at the start of the 1959 draft by the Green Bay Packers. But he didn’t sign with them. He spent two years in the CFL and one with the AFL’s Dallas Texans before leaving the sport to begin a career of over 45 years as an attorney in Des Moines.

“Being the No. 1 draft choice in the league wasn’t what it was now,” Duncan told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2009. “So basically it came down to money. I got more to play in Canada.”

Four of Hayden Fry’s Iowa quarterbacks were drafted. Two of them, first-round pick Chuck Long and Mark Vlasic, played in the league. They threw 19 and 4 TD passes in the NFL, respectively.

Jim Youel of Vinton threw for seven NFL scores (and intercepted two passes as a defensive back) from 1946 to 1948. Jerry Niles threw a TD pass in his one season with the New York Giants, in 1947.

That’s it, 31 NFL touchdown passes from all the quarterbacks who finished their college careers at Iowa. Warner had 31 TD tosses in his NFL postseason career, 208 in the regular-season. Bragging rights, Northern Iowa.

Former Hawkeye Rudy Bukich did have 61 NFL touchdown throws from 1953 to 1968. He came to Iowa from his St. Louis home as a wingback, then transferred to USC and switched to quarterback. He was the winning quarterback when USC won the 1953 Rose Bowl, then had his long pro career. He also played a gladiator in 1960 movie epic “Spartacus.”

For a half-century, Iowa high school graduates have said “But look at Rudy Bukich” when they told their parents they needed to move to the West Coast to live more fulfilling and prosperous lives.

The burden to change that is now upon Stanzi. Former University of Iowa students have become great scientists and physicians, winners of Academy Awards and Pulitzer Prizes, leaders and trailblazers.

Is it too much to ask for one prominent NFL quarterback?

I only needed about 1 minute into the first clip to know that he has 3x the arm as Cassel.

Another Hawkeye fan chiming in...

Stanzi has the physical tools. IMO what he lacks is composure. The thing I always noticed about him was he was over-amped at the start of games. It would take him a qtr to calm down and stop missing open guys. Once he hit his groove though, he was pretty good. Can make reads and make all the throws.

People talk about his decision making. When things would get hairy, the deep ball was his answer. That makes for some huge plays, and some stupid ones. I think the gunslinger reference is about right. He's not afraid to try and make a team pay. It just doesn't always work out.

You wouldn't have caught me saying "I hope we draft Stanzi", but I think it's a good pick for the 5th round. I think he has the tools to last in the NFL, just don't know if he can develop into a starter.

Yeah, Vlasic was the most successful of the entire group I'd say but Hartlieb was the only other one I recall. Thought Brad Banks spent some time on an NFL squad too.
