185 mph sounds like a lot, but I have no point of reference for how fast it actually is. This video at 117 mph makes me happy that nobody is going to be hit with 185 mph winds.

I have experienced 100mph straight line winds here in SW Kansas, and it was not fun.

A few years ago we were trying to bin some wheat ahead of an incoming storm. We had a breakdown and didn't get it so I was trying to get everything in the shed a half mile away while dad and my nephew buttoned up the bin. The wind was blowing probably 60 sustained. He forgot to shut the bin door so he hopped out of his pickup, ran over and shut the door and was headed back to his pickup. He got hit with some kind of microburst or mini tornado or something. He said the wind was probably double the speed and all he could do was drop down and grab onto the tire of his pickup. He said he could feel the pickup trying to go.

I couldn't see much because of the dirt, but there wasn't anything unusual a half mile away. Then he got back and told me about it. He wasn't whining or complaining. He was scared.

I try not to **** with weather too much. Mother Nature is a cranky old woman.

I agree.

What was crazy about the wind we got 7-8 years ago was that it was sustained for over an hour.

****ing crazy.

Hurricane Hugo, in a submarine that was floating in a dry-dock. We had a LOT of the machinery out, so when they patched the hull below the waterline while they knew we'd float they just didn't know which way we'd float. Steel cables around the sail (in case it wanted to roll), lots of other ropes to keep us centered. It was interesting to say the least, and the eye was a clear as could be. Some of the craziest dives I ever made were to do initial inspection of the hull and mark the debris in the dry-dock. The surge never made it over the dry-dock wall (which was why they floated us, they were sure it would), but tons of shit was left in the dry-dock and a shit-ton more blew in. You just can't "secure" enough shit laying around a shipyard! I was very happy when the demolition divers made their way down from the Norfolk dive locker to help and ultimately take over.

One of the other subs I operated off of (waiting to go into dry-dock) broke loose and they had to submerged her in the freakin river. That was a fun extraction for them to say the least.

Crazy times, and Hugo, I don't think, was as big as Irma. Certainly these
