Got home in time to catch the 12th and 13th innings. I must say that Kauffman Stadium in HDTV looks awesome!

Since the ASB for the Royals(14 games), they are 8-6.
First 14 games in the season in April, a sorry ass 5-9.

yeah, Boras is a prick and stressed to Beltran to get his money now, but have you read the number of comments by former players that said they really enjoyed their time in KC and its a shame it couldn't be kept together.
Beltran has said it this year - and probably feels it given his numbers Damon has said it, though his stay in boston now is pretty sweet, he was pretty down about his return to california not = what he envisioned Dye hasn't said alot except alluding to what a team it could have been if they kept it intacked.

Dye's making $4mm, Damon's making $8mm and Beltran's making about $12mm. That's $24mm in your outfield. You got Sweeney making $11mm, Berroa at about $1mm, you wouldn't have Teahan, or Buck, so you figure comparable veteran replacements at somewhere btw $4-6mm total. You'd have a rookie 2b either way at something short of a half mil, and a DH (Stairs) at +$1mm. Thats $19MM for your starting infield. Pitching would be about $24MM or so, and your bench would be about $5MM. That brings you to a total of $72MM for that team. That would almost exactly double their current payroll. and put them in the top 15 in MLB salaries, vs their current of last (#30). IMHO, The Royals don't need a $72mm payroll to compete. But, they do need to be in the $55-60MM range for sure. Spending ~33% on one player is not a good idea imo, even if he's worth that money relative to the rest of mlb. If they keep developing the young arms, and keep progressing with the bats in A & AA, this team could be ready to make a run at the Central in '07. Next year, they should be competitive, but '07 should really be our year. They need some guys to put pressure on Buck at the minor league level, and they have to have at least one of their young corner outfielders make a big time move in 06.

On a side note, the second game on ESPN is the Yankmees (gag) vs. the Twinkies (gag). I honestly don't know who I hope wins. I can't stand either team. If I had my druthers, they would both be charged a loss.

Nice win.
Royals were 13-37 (.260) when Bell was hired. Today's win makes them 38-63 (.297). That means they're only a game under .500 under Bell. 25-26 (.4900. |

The Royals are going to have to draft and develop players consistently in order to become competitive and to maintain it. Unless, and until, MLB implements a salary cap, the Royals will always be developing talent for the teams with the money to spend. Even if they are able to develop a roster that can compete, they won't be able to hold onto those players.

The real truth is if the Royals had the stadium downtown - even as it is now with viable businesses around it, bars, & young people living down there, it would greatly improve. Working people could goto a number of day games. I think with the reality of a new ballpark downtown it would mean higher ticket prices and people seem to bitch about that, but if you want a winner you have to pay for one. Corprate tickets would def. go up if the location was better. Arrowhead is where it should be b/c its setup for tailgating and an 8 game schedule. For 82 games, a Wrigley, St Louis setup is so much better. If you told me they could be a replica of the K downtown by the Sprint Center and the new entertainment district and the only two differences would be wider concourses and more bathrooms I'd take it in a heartbeat. Anyone else hear that the new entertainment district just approved open containers- you can move from bar to bar with booze!

Speaking of minol leaguers in the Royals system to put pressure on Buck.........................it ain't good.
Their best prospect is probably Jared Price. He's 23 and sitting in A ball. My guess is that he'll be playing in Wichita later this year if they can find him some AB's (and if he can stay healthy). More than likely, that means that the Royals would have to cut someone in Omaha and move Matt Tupman from the Wranglers to the ORoyals. IMHO, that's a move that has to happen in order to get some "players" that can put some heat on Buck to improve. Right now, there isn't even a friggen nip on his heels, and I doubt the Royals will spend the bones to bring in some competition next Spring (read, more than a replacement catcher, ie. Castillo type). Right now, the only guy in the system that could even remotely put some pressure on Buck is Scott Walter in Omaha (26 yrs old), and I don't know that he has the defensive skills to really play at the MLB level....This spot is starting to rival our hole's at the corner outfield position.
