No Bowe tomorrow/Green's turn at QB

Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 6/1
Jun 01, 2007, 4:50:58 PM

Mini-Camp, Day 1 – Highlights

HERM EDWARDS: “This is the first time we’ve gone together as a team. All of a sudden the linemen are involved and it’s 11-on-11 football and that’s where you really see where you are at as a team. We haven’t done this and really practiced together as a team. This is just the first practice.

“The tempo was OK, but I thought it died at the end a little bit as guys got a little fatigued and tired. It’s generally the big guys and the receivers. You’re breaking the huddle and every play is a team play. It puts a lot of stress on guys and that’s what we’re trying to do. I think it’s a good venue to compete and we’ve got to keep trying to get better.”

Q: After this weekend do you’ll have a better feel for what you have because it’s a mandatory camp?

EDWARDS: “You get your real feel when you get to training camp and you get the pads on. This is more of an exercise of athletic ability and speed and what type of condition we’re in. This is more conditioning than anything else. It’s a matter of throwing the ball and running the ball a little bit, but you really can’t get that physical because we don’t have pads on. But most of our players have been here which is good. This is the first time we’ve gone 11-on-11 and that’s good.”

Q: You have some guys not working today: Jason Dunn, Ron Edwards and Michael Allan, your tight end.

EDWARDS: “Michael Allan had hernia surgery and Jason Dunn is coming off his back deal and he’ll not be able to do anything probably until training camp. Edwards was kept out because of a hamstring and Bober cut his finger and has 10 stitches right now. McIntosh was dehydrated a bit today. He was sick the day before yesterday. Allan won’t be ready until camp.”

Q: You excited to get out in front of the fans tomorrow?

EDWARDS: “I hope the players are. They’re not coming to watch me. They’ll need a program because there are a lot of new players and that’s a good thing. The veterans know we have great fans and when you play in our stadium – even when you practice in our stadium – they can get real vocal. It’ll be interesting. We hope we get a good day.

“For our young players it’ll be the first time they put on a helmet and go into our stadium.”

Q: How important is it for veterans to help your young guys? Eddie Kennison said he looks forward to that.

EDWARDS: “Every guy is different. I always tell veterans your legacy at the end of the day is what have you done for a young player. Eddie’s one of those guys and Donnie Edwards is one of those guys. We have players on this team that do that. I learned that from Roman Gabriel. He was my mentor when I was coming up. He was the veteran quarterback at Philadelphia, the third guy, and I had the privilege of walking with him to practice every day. He taught me to be a pro and guys owe that to a young player to make him understand what it takes to be a pro in this league.”

Q: Will Bowe be back for any part of this weekend?

EDWARDS: “He’ll probably be back this Sunday. He went down to New Orleans for the funeral (M. Hill of the New England Patriots). He played with the kid for two years (at LSU). He asked me what should I do? I said, ‘there’s not any question what you’re going to do. You’re going to go down and go to the funeral. That’s more important than anything else.’ He should be back Sunday.”

Q: How’s Alfonso Boone been?

EDWARDS: “Boone’s been good. That’s a good addition for us, a veteran guy. Real physical guy inside and now you’re talking about he and Ron (Edwards) – real big powerful guys inside.”

Q: Is there anything you want to see out here specifically?

EDWARDS: “Most of the rookies have improved since the rookie mini-camp. Mentally they’ve been challenged now a lot more. They’ve done a lot more things in the last four or five practices compared to the rookie camp. Most of them are catching on pretty well.

“But things start running together on these guys and you know that. That’s why I said today if we’re doing too much on either side of the ball we’ve got to slow down because we’ve got to give them an opportunity to compete. The worst thing you can do is throw so much that they’re thinking too much and they can’t play. We want to make sure we’re evaluating their talent. We have a lot of time before we have to put our system in. That’s why we go to training camp?

Q: You gave Brodie Croyle most of the work with the first unit today. Will you do that this weekend?

EDWARDS: “No, it flips again tomorrow. That’s how we’re going to do it.”

Q: Is it Green’s turn tomorrow?

EDWARDS: “Yes, and Huard on Sunday. That’s the way we see it. That’s the way it’ll be fair. They all understand that. It’s been a good competition so far.”

Q: So then it won’t be weighted?

EDWARDS: “All I know we’re going to be as fair as we can be. I think they all understand that.”

These comments from Herm impressed me. Maybe, just maybe he is smarter than it apears. I sure hope so, hope he turns out to be the best Chiefs HC ever.

At least we'll all be able to see what the young guys bring to the team. That's one of the things I hated most about DV. Just never could understand why he hardly gave the young guys a second look.

They way I saw it, he let the guys play that earned the job. Assuming you draft shitty, none of the young guys are going to earn the job.

This is definitely something that makes me like Herm, football aside.

What I was thinking as well. He has a long ways to go to meet your last though. Let's hope he turns out to be the best coz I think we are stuck with him until Kingless departs. It looks like he is good enough to win 9 to 11 games each season and occassionaly get into the playoffs, which will give Kingless a reason to keep him around. I want to be excited about watching a S.B. and if he is selecting the best players possible he has a chance.

I, too, didn't understand DV not having competition for all possitions. DV didn't seem to like young players and maybe that is why he didn't train them. Herm's being sure the young guys understand the system is certainly a large step in the right direction. How can a guy have a chance to play unless he understands what he is suppose to do.

So, yea, that part of the article boosts my support of Herm.

Yes! After all it is just mini camp and as Herm said, "they don't have pads on." Yes, it would help the kid’s development but just maybe Herm’s decision will help team moral.
