Laptops...good,bad and ugly
Ok looking for a decent lap top for the kid who is starting college soon. Promised him a laptop before school starts and yes I have been putting it off all summer. Last couple of home computers have been Dell's and happy with them but open to other ideas but nope not an apple.
Just need a basic laptop with enough umph to get the kid through the next four years....also he needs Word and that good stuff. Open to suggestions....what's a good deal and what's the brand to buy nowdays....Want to stay under $700 or so if I can. Thanks all.... |

I just bought the Dell Inspiron 17R at Best Buy for 700.00. I5 processor at 2.9 Ghz, 700 Gb SATA hard drive, 8 Gb of Ram, 64 bit processing system, and rated at 5.9 on the Windows Experience bar. 17.3" display, built in bluetooth (which I use a lot with my phone), built in wireless and built in wifi if I expand my Clear account (in other words wifi on the go without leeching off others).
The only drawbacks I have is that the video card is integrated, but honestly every laptop I have owned I have never taken apart (only added RAM) and I didn't get a bluray player. The current price at Dell.com is 943.00. But as I said, Best Buy had it for 700.00. That is not a sale price either. I don't know why there is such a huge difference, but I took advantage.

Have you checked with the college to see if they have any deals?
Also, all manufacturers have a college student discount program where your son can get big breaks i.e. Microsoft Student program lets him get software at low price. Will need his .edu e-mail address. http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/default.aspx Or Dell http://www.dell.com/content/segmente...s&l=en&cs=6099 Whatever you do don't buy text books from the college book store. You might consider having your son sign up (free) for Amazon Student. It has some great deals on text books, laptops, dorm furniture, etc. and lots of other things a student needs/wants. You also get a year of Amazon Prime free shipping for free. http://www.amazon.com/b/?ie=UTF8&nod...l_2f62txde0r_e

there was a commercial a few weeks back that if you bought ____________ computer, you also got an x-box system as well.
for the life of me i can't think of the name of the sys, and i'm sure it's a basic game/comp system, but if i can catch the 'mercial again, i'll update. seemed right in your price range. |

A laptop that will be carried around that much is going to get beat to hell so a business laptop is worth a look. I went through two mid level laptops in 4 years of school and I was being careful. Check out the Lenovo Thinkpad T and X Series.

I got the xbox-360 deal awhile back. Split the two apart, sold the xbox-360 on ebay for $700. So I got a free laptop and 50 dollars. Not bad for alittle bit of work.
