This guy could get us a GREAT pass rush next year...
Larry English, MAC Defensive Player of the Year. Obviously, I'm a big NIU fan so I'm curious what everyones take is on this guy. His draft stock is skyrocketing right now. Sporting news has him rated as the #8 prospect in the entire draft, and he's been on Mel Kiper's big board for awhile now and now is #1 on nfldraftcountdown.com's hot prospect list
One of the country's most prolific pass rushers, Larry English amassed an amazing 56.0 tackles for a loss and 32.5 sacks during his college career with the Huskies. As a senior English totaled 15.0 TFL and 8.0 Sacks en route to being named the Mid-American Conference's Most Valuable Player and, for the second year in a row, the Defensive Player of the Year. A classic 'tweener at 6-3 and 255 pounds, English played defensive end in college but he may have to make the move to outside linebacker in the pros. Most likely in a 3-4 scheme. What position English will play might still be up in the air but at this point scouts don't seem to care because they tend to find room for guys who can rush the passer like he can. Right now English looks like a fringe Day One pick but his stock is really soaring and there are some who feel he could compete for a spot in the first round. http://www.draftcountdown.com/featur...t/Hot-List.php Here are some highlight videos of him, im just like hear people opinions good and bad, i think hed be a great pick up if he makes it to the 2nd round |

With MAC competition, the question will always be asked: Is he Jason Babin or Jason Taylor. Some of it will depend on his wingspan and his strength. If he has shorter arms and he's not specimen with superior strength or speed off the edge, he might not be a good fit for a Cover 2 scheme, and we aren't going to switch to the 3-4 with our personnel.

I know Larry well, as i used to be part of the NIU program for years. The guy is a straight up monster, ive never seen anybody as jacked as him, at least in person, and speed off the edge is his specialty which you can see a lot in the videos. But at the same time your right about the MAC, it can be hit or miss, but a lot of the guys that do come out of the conference have chips on their shoulders for being passed over by the bigger schools. Larry had a sack against Minnesota and 2 against Tennessee this year which were their big out of conference games so he proved he can do it against better competition. I remember when we had Michael Turner a few years back and he used to straight up roll people. He did it to ROIDMAN and Maryland as well as Brodie's Crimson Tide in 03. Sorry for the tangent, just reliving the old glory days!

I feel you, I went to a MAC school too, and I follow the league as close as someone can who lives 600+ miles away.
****ing bastard was offered by BG and went to NIU instead, so I hate him. I know he was a LB in high school. I wonder how much more weight his frame can hold, though. You know he'll probably have a good career if Pitt gets ahold of him, though.

Speaking of hit or miss, didn't Ben Roethlisberger come out of the MAC?

The one thing that you can notice just from those vids, is that he is a vicious tackler, but he lacks a burst to close. A lot of elite DE's at the college level blast into the quarterback once they clear the edge. It seemed more like he was just gaining ground until he got him.

Notice the difference in speed around the edge here:

Moss, doesn't really count though. However, there are a lot of good interior linemen in the NFL from the MAC.
