Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

I think the pick is Joeckel or Fisher with or without the trade. Albert said he wasn't playing under the franchise tag, so, I'll take the trade.

Im sure he didn't say he wasn't going to play. He said he didn't want to play under it. Just like any other player doesn't want to do that.

I'm just really tired of the ENDLESS effort from homers to discredit Branden Albert. He's a good left tackle. Who has pass blocked for an offense that threw more than it ran. Who was among the league leaders in fewest pressures allowed. Who does NOT have injury issues.

It's bullshit. BULLSHIT.

Maybe I misheard him. I thought he said, he wasn't showing up until the Chiefs gave him a long term deal. It sounded like he meant holding out into TC. Maybe Dorsey and Reid didn't want to deal with a messy contract dispute into camp and would rather cut ties now.

If you need a link to figure that out, I don't ****ing know what to tell you. This is 2009 allover again and nobody wants to move up in this shit draft.

I'm not going to consider any scenario's with Albert because Albert won't be staying here for the long-term. I'd prefer he got realistic about his worth (and it's not Brown $$$) and they locked him in for the next 5 years, but I realize it isn't going to happen.

I'm not going to consider kicking the can down the road with Albert for a one year rental at 9.8 million so Alex Smith can lead us to mediocrity. They've already blown their leverage in a hilarious fashion, so if Jeff Ireland is dying to give them a life raft and hand Albert a bad contract than hell do it.

Don't rope me as a truefan pillowbiter though. I'd rather see what Stephenson can do as a starter than get dat ~*~Franchise Left Tackle ~*~

Your more realistic options are either:
A. Get what you can out of a dumb, desperate Jeff Ireland.
B. Rent Albert for a year and if you're lucky, cash in on a late 3rd round compensatory pick 2 years from now

E:
Evan Silva ‏@evansilva 2m
Expectation on Branden Albert is #Dolphins GM Ireland will cave. Every move he's made this offseason has reeked of hot-seat desperation.

Seriously, whose going to jump up to 1 with this draft class? Top players don't come from top value position like a lock QB or QBs like last years draft. Teams seem pretty set on getting value since so many claim this class has a lot of 1st round talent but very little in terms of elite blue chip top 5 guys.

I'm sure teams will move up to target players they have an eye on, but I get the feeling those wanting to make that move won't think or feel the need to do so until at least closer to the 8 - 10th overall pick, where the compensation and swapping of 1st rounders is so steep.

JFC, a year ago the #2 overall got 3 1st rounders and some change, and does anyone here feel the Chiefs could even land swapping 1sts, picking up another 1st and a 2nd for the top overall BC I just don't see it happening... who is dying to get up to draft "their" and feels that would only be available at 1.1?

Like it or not, he is under contract and if he doesn't attend mandatory team activities, the fines are huge for him not doing so.

If he isnt traded, he will show up.

So, Alex Smith Fan neg repped me for this post. I didn't even ****ing address him. I was talking to Messier.

That's the issue of the day for Chiefs fans. We've had gobs of great LTs come and go through our locker room. We haven't had a legit QB come through in the same way since Len Dawson. And it's been 30 years since we even legitimately tried to make that a reality.

So excuse me if people couldn't shut up about Geno Smith around here. It was kind of a big deal, you see.
That's some pretty tame ass shit in terms of things I have previously said about Alex Smith's value as a franchise QB. I have yet to call Alex an asshole and a terrible person like I did to Matt Cassel.

Now the chode has his rep turned off. I'm pretty sure his vagina has been bruised for the last time on here, and now he's gone off the deep end.

Put the guy on suicide alert, people. Dude probably needs help.

This. So much for drafting players, developing them and keeping them. This is so a piolio move... Think ahead, and draft the replacement.....

I'll agree, there is very little to say Albert hasn't played well enough that you shouldn't argue that Reid and co. would be wise to see how he does in his system next year, and if he walks after next year I'll bet they'd still end up getting a 2nd round compensatory pick and there is no worry about his $$$ then anyway. If he does play well, then you make sure you get a new deal worked out with his agent hopefully during the season. Either way I think their options with him and draft position and all bode much better next year than this...
