DJ, LB, DT #58, DE's and "The Falcon"

Didn't Gunther come up with "The Falcon" defense which made the LB DT #58 kinda a DE, a la falcon lining up on the line of scrimage with a hand on the ground? DT was a good pass rusher in college, but really turned it up several notches as a pro. Watching DJ sack the QB sunday made me wonder why Gunther doesn't have him as a down lineman pass rusher more? I am not in KC and usually drink during games....and before...and after-you get the idea, anyway, if he is used like that I wasn't sure if DJ was used as a pass rusher or just a blitzer from the LBer position? If he is as fast and quick and talented as everyone says maybe he would be good at it as a down lineman?

Not DJ's style, he's a more complete which includes LB coverage and playing the run/blitz in alternating locations.

I bet thats it. I did hear that DJ was really good in coverage esp the deep ball. Then again, even if DT would have been great in pass coverage, if the QB was ever throwing the ball, I didn't want to see him in coverage, I wanted to see him chasing the QB that he did so well.

Gunther had so much success with it, I think any of our LBers would be good at rushing the passer more.

Not always. We often played a 4-3 and he lined up at DE.

Rarely? I have game film of it from 97. We did more of it later in DT's career when Gunther was DC and later head coach.

Was Neil Smith used as a DE in a 4-3? I thought he was, and DT was used as the DE on the other side used to rush the passer.

We've been playing Allen at LB lately. That's probably a closer fit.

Has that been in the 3-4? I ask this because in 97' when Thomas was the 'Falcon', P. McDaniels, a D.E. was DT's backup. So when Thomas was not in the line-up, a D.E. was playing the falcon. I am just curious if Gun is attempting to reestablish the falcon with Allen or has Allen been playing at a true linebacker spot in the formations you are referring to?

I think Gunther is using him correctly. He has been blitzing pretty often, but it's usually trying to hit gaps through the line instead of off the edge, and even then other teams are compensating for the rush on that side.

Yesterday was just a case of an overload on one side while DJ stayed alone on the other and had a free shot. Also, he played a lot of coverage yesterday, usually lining up in the slot.

Coming into the draft, his instincts were never questioned, it was his tackling. As it has turned out, his tackling is just fine, its his awareness that needs to rise. He's getting confused in coverage every once in a while and even then he almost gets back in time to make the play.

It's just a matter of time until it clicks for DJ like it did for Kawika, and then he'll be a complete terror. I don't think he's a Derrick Thomas, but he's definitely along the lines of Derrick Brooks.

Appeared to be in the 3-4 to me. He talked about it after the game, I think, I'll see if I can find it anywhere.
