Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Ya the physical is the last step upon completing the trade. It's taking awhile for this deal to go down I'll say.

Do you enjoy making yourself look like an idiot? You must. The general CP consensus is that Albert is a good LT and lands somewhere in the 5-10 area. Nobody claims him to be top 3.

That said. Joke-l won't be top 15 next year.

Fischer obviously has higher upside.

I've seen Albert referred to here as Elite and Franchise. He is neither. He is good but not beyond seeking an upgrade to. Either Joeckel or fisher should turn out to be a better pro than albert

It is the last step and the Jets didn't give permission for it until the trade was worked out. That's the crux of what I'm saying.

The Chiefs haven't allowed Miami to have any direct contact with Albert. That includes a physical, but it's not limited to it. According to Mortenson, Miami wanted to bring Albert in for a visit, I guess to try selling him on signing there, and Dorsey said no because nothing had been agreed to.

Not only is that a denial that anything's been agreed to, it's just common sense that Dorsey wouldn't deny that request if they had worked out the trade. They would give Miami permission to do whatever was needed.

When you have a top ten player at a position of declining value, you don't use the #1 overall pick to "upgrade" him. Especially when the first three years of your "upgrade" players career, he will likely be a downgrade.

Joke-l is a strong guy with good balance, that is about as far as his "rare" skillset goes. He is more polished than Fischer. Fischer though is just as strong, more athletic, bigger and more aggressive than Joke-l. He isn't quite the polished pass blocker, but has more upside and is a much better run blocker. How anyone can say Joke-l is a better prospect is beyond me. Right now, his only real nods are polish and he didn't play at Central Michigan. Period.

That said, this team shouldn't take either. Albert is a better player than either right now.

I bet by year two, they will be as good as and quite possibly better. And five years younger and cost half as much money.

And will we be competing in the playoffs due to this lateral move to save money?

I've had Dion Jordan going to JAX for a long time. However, I've talked to several GM's/Personnel Directors that expect JAX to take an OT
