Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Saying he doesn't have elite speed is like saying Bowe or Boldin didn't have elite speed coming out of the draft.

I think the Alex Smith trade has clouded everything that the new administration has done thus far. I'm not excited about Smith's arrival to KC, but I'm keeping an open mind. The guy has talent, and showed that he can lead a team deep into the playoffs. I'd rather develop our own, but I think Dorsey and Reid have decided to build a team that can compete now AND in the future. Frankly its a smart move in the modern NFL.

I'm an Albert fan, and would prefer to sign him to a long term deal and draft to fill other needs. That said, I don't really know what that other need is. Do want to use the 1.1 for a 3/4 DE or NT? $hit, I'm not sure that we are going to even run a true 3-4 defense. Do we want to use 1.1 on a QB? I'm not opposed, but it our talent people say he's not worthy of the pick, we are probably right to look elsewhere.

That means the value is with one of the LT's. It clears cap space, which can be used to create more space in 2014. And I also think getting the 2nd round pick back is critical because we can get a real talent with that pick. Albert is 29, and while that's not old, Reid and Dorsey probably look at it as a choice between a young ascending players and one who may start to decline.

And it helped. Smith ran a 4.43 40-yard dash and showcased his tremendous athletic abilities by performing in the shuttle drill and performing ball drills with individual NFL scouts.

If Hunt went after some lesser known candidate, it would have been he's too cheap, he just wants to fill seats, so the guy is damned if he does or damned if he doesn't in regard to all of this.

I personally think the product on the field will improve dramatically, but just like what happened in 2009, it wouldn't shock me if it's a disaster either.
I don't doubt that the product will improve. I expect the team to win between 7-9 games. I also don't see them ever winning more than ten.

If you want to compare Clark Hunt to something, I'd compare him to JCPenney. They fired their CEO last week after he burned through a lot of cash transitioning their entire business model. They brought the old CEO back in and he decided to abort the change and go back to the old model, which will cost just as much money while going back to a business plan that caused his ass to get fired in the first place.

That's essentially what Hunt did. He had a chance to rebuild the team from the ground up, keeping essential pieces and changing the direction and structure of the franchise only to panic halfway through and go back to the same course that led to so much failure and stagnation in the first place.

Because you're knocking his speed. I'm pointing out that you don't need elite speed.

Sean Smith has never had close to it, and he's not the quickest guy.

He had a distinctly average vertical of 34 inches, too, so again...the guy is just not an elite athlete by any stretch.

Do we now live in a universe where another team's stupidity excuses someone else's?

Logically, how do we get to that point?

Report: Browns want ***** decision soon
Updated: January 2, 2009, 8:35 AM ET
ESPN.com news services

The Browns had set a Thursday deadline for New England Patriots vice president Scott ***** to make a decision on becoming Cleveland's top football executive, the Boston Herald reported, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.

According to the report, ***** and Browns owner Randy Lerner, who met Wednesday in New York, left the meeting with no deal in place, but a deadline for ***** to make a decision was established.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer, however, citing a league source with knowledge of the negotiations, said ***** was not given a deadline.

Thursday came and went without word of ***** making a decision.

The Herald previously reported that Lerner was prepared to make a "huge" financial offer to ***** that would include full control of the Browns' football operations, and that Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz was *****'s first choice to replace Romeo Crennel as head coach.

After his Hawkeyes defeated South Carolina in the Outback Bowl on Thursday, Ferentz told ESPN's Rob Stone that any talk about the Browns' job was premature.

The Herald reported that according to a source, ***** made demands that would be impossible for any team to meet -- leaving some in the Browns organization wondering if ***** really wants to leave the Patriots.

For the vacant coaching job, Lerner has met with former New York Jets coach Eric Mangini and New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and set up interviews with Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who spent three years in the Browns' personnel department as a pro and college scout in the 1990s; and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, a Canton, Ohio, native.

The 49-year-old Spagnuolo has an interview with the Jets scheduled for Saturday. The Detroit Lions are also expected to meet with Spagnuolo.

The Plain Dealer reported the Browns also are interested in meeting with ex-Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

*****, who has been coach Bill Belichick's right-hand man in the Patriots' front office since 2000, is also being sought by the Kansas City Chiefs, according to media reports.

But the Kansas City Star reported that Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt already has determined the team will split up the duties that had been the sole responsibility of former general manager Carl Peterson, with a new team president handling business affairs and a GM handling football operations. That would seem to run counter to *****'s reported interest in full control.

The Browns also were preparing to talk with Atlanta president Rich McKay on Thursday for the football operations job, but because the Falcons are preparing for Saturday's playoff game, that interview has been postponed, a source told the Plain Dealer.
