*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

I've never considered myself blessed with great genetics, but the more I read this thread, the more I feel that I am. I'm 5'10ish and weigh 190 lbs with a 33 inch waist. I lifted real hard back in my teens and 20's, drinking "health" shakes and taking amino acids to get "huge." Then I pretty much took up triathlon training in my late 20's and did that thing until a massive shoulder injury stopped my ability to swim. Then I continued to run and cycle until just a few years ago. Now a do a run a week or so, go for a real long ride about 4 times a summer, but thats about it. I never wanted to "flab out" as I aged, so I've moved to a mosty vegetarian diet, although I do cheat once a week or so. At 47yo, I've still got more muscle mass over my entire body than pretty much anyone I see that is my general age, give or take 5 years, and all I do is 100 push ups per day (feet elevated), some core stuff with a medicine ball, and dumbell curls twice a week.

If I did what Silock, Lewdog, Clathan all did, I think I'd be a freaking beast. In fact, I have to be careful what I eat or I start to bulk up. So, long story short, after reading through this, I think genetics plays a bigger role than I ever though it did. All of your hard work should be commended.
Genetics>Steroids>Nutrition>Training>Recovery

That's how I think it goes when you factor in what it takes to have a great physique. Maybe flop Nutrition and Steroids.

Unless you are Sac and then you just eat a vegan diet and pack on 40lbs a muscle in a single year on a 5'11" frame and not look bulked up.

yeah def flop those two. steroids don't work to their full capacity unless your nutrition is on point.

Yea, I'm starting to realize I'll never be as strong as I wanna be or as strong as my physique suggests I am. I have the world's smallest parents and that surely hasn't helped my cause. I'm my mom's side of the family's tallest cousin at 5'7".

How's that for bad genetics?!

Alrighty, first day of pure strength training (low reps). I was able to do 130 lbs on my barbell squats, and 250 lbs on the leg press. Why am I able to do so much more on the leg press?

Maybe has to do with the fact that, when you do squats, you also have to squat the weight of your body. When you do leg presses you're only pressing the weight on the machine.

This is what I'm thinking. More overall exertion.

Because everybody can. I don't know if it's the body weight thing or if it's the fact that you don't have to keep it from
