To act otherwise is to believe that you have a monopoly on common sense.
Actually the most idiotic thing is the fact that people who are offended think the appropriate action is to try to change someone else.

You choose to be offended, it is entirely within your power to choose NOT to be offended.

People seem not to realize that that is quite frankly one of the most powerful things we have. If people choose to stop being 'offended' by an 'offensive' word then is it still offensive? Or did the people who choose NOT to be offended just take the power away from the word in question?

People don't need to be rescued by someone or something else, people need to be empowered to know that they can save themselves.

If someone has the power to offend you then they have the power to control your actions. You have to take that power back and learn to let it go.

You can live your life being offended at all things and be useless or you can ignore it and SHOW the people that they are wrong. If someone wants to think like a bigot then well they're wrong and people are allowed to be wrong(note actions are an entirely different issue than words).

To this day I will never understand why people think words have power. They never do and they never will. You give words power and you can take it back.

This is a great post and it's even more relevant in this case where no offense is intended in the first place. Any offense taken is manufactured entirely in the mind of the offendee.

A bit dishonest.

15-20 years ago they made a HUGE stink about it (on all levels, as Redskin is a popular high school mascot as well) and nobody gave a shit.

They've given up on caring. They have bigger problems and more important fights I suppose. Same old argument "This ethnic slur is our history". To act like they were never in on being pissed about it is dishonest.

I don't find it offensive, because I'm not offended. I find it tacky and outdated but can understand.

I remember a reservation got so pissed about this they created an attempted racist name for their school.

I can't remember what it was called, but I think it was like 'Fighting whites'.

Natives suck at creating offensive names.

Yeah, and let me guess - no white people cared. Maybe there was some fake and forced outrage, but nobody really cared.

Tell me why you believe this to be an adequate retort to the Washington Redskins, but you'd almost certainly have a deep moral objection to the Harlem N-words.

You have a deep misunderstanding about what it means to be racially/ethnically offended.

Being offended is more visceral than it is intellectual. It's less a decision and more of a physiological reaction. Ask any woman that's faced sexism or any minority that's faced prejudice -- choosing to not be offended is not an option, they experience it.

Now, choosing to name a team an ethnic slur -- that's an intellectual decision you can simply decide not to do.

Instead of throwing a gigantic ethnic slur out there (which we both agree this team name is), how about you choose to respect other people different from you enough not to name a billion dollar business' mascot after a slur for them, in the capital of a country that's treated that population so dire for pretty much our entire existence. Rather than doing it, and saying "hey, you can choose not to be offended!"

Who is "they"? Are you talking about a tiny group of vocal protesters?

Nope. "Chief" is the highest and most honorable designation in the native American community I would think.

But really, is anybody surprised by Lefty Liberal Costas who has already went after the 2nd amendment?

He is a total Lefty douchebag pushing the progressive/marxist agenda in the world of sports

Please. The way this really works is that initially no one cares. Then, a few people who look for stuff to be outraged about start calling it a slur and talking about how deeply offensive and visceral it is, and if you have enough success, eventually the people who didn't really care about it in the first place start believing that they've been offended. From the indifference we're still seeing, you have a lot of incitement ahead of you before your work will be done.

It's a rebuttal to your thesis that taking offense over a name like this comes from within. It doesn't. The race warriors like you and Bob Costas need to beat the drums for years to set the tone. And you, in turn, have been conditioned by your ultra-PC immersion.

Yes, it is.

You aren't offended by words you don't understand or don't care about.

It's not a ****ing peanut allergy - you decide what you find insulting.

The only reason racial slurs are more important to some than religious or any other slur is that's how you choose to feel...
