Damon Huard for League MVP?

Michael David Smith from The Fanhouse seems to think that isn't that crazy,

Damon Huard, quarterback, Chiefs: This is the shocker on the list. If, before the season, I had ranked all 1,500 or so NFL players in order of how likely they were to be on an MVP watch list, I'm not sure Huard would have made the top 750. But this guy is just playing incredible football right now. Seven touchdowns, one interception, a passer rating of 96.7. Maybe we shouldn't be shocked -- after all, Huard's only other stint as a starter was as a substitute for the injured Dan Marino in 1999, and he played well enough that a lot of Dolphins fans wanted to keep Marino on the sidelines. It's too bad it took so long for him to get another chance.

As much of a Chiefs fan as I am, I have to say Huard probably won't make league MVP.

They already gave it to Peeton Manning for the next five years.

Pretty farfetched, but he's much higher up on the "possibility" list than anyone would have expected I guess.

Big surprise? Yes.
Nice story? Yes.

MVP? Hell no.

Our offense is ranked 24th in the league. He's playing well for a back-up, but a back-up playing like a mediocre starter is hardly worthy of MVP talk.

Don't tell GoFeisty and HooHooMeMe that he's playing like a mediocre starter.

I agree that Huard isn't MVP material right now, but he's definitely playing better than mediocre. He's 5th in the league in QB rating, with only 1 INT. The fact that our offense is ranked 24th in the league is largely due to the fact that LJ had not been putting up good rushing numbers until last week.

It'll be hard for him to beat Colquitt, but he's in the top two.

Jake Plummer had a great QB rating last year too, but that doesn't make him a good QB. Huard has been protected with play-calling. Granted we gave him a lot more leash last week against the Chargers, but it's not like the guy has been slinging it all over the field the last 5 weeks. Before this past Sunday, about 80% of his passes were thrown inside 10 yards.

I'd say that he is playing better than a mediocre starter. As others have noted, his QB rating is currently 5th in the league. If the MVP was actually awarded based on the "value" of the player's performance to the team, I would say he should have a shot (assuming he continues at his current pace). In reality, the MVP is awarded largely based on hype and publicity with a slight emphasis to the "value" of the player's performance. Translation: he has no shot even if he starts the rest of the season and the Chiefs end up 12-4.

The argument isn't whether Damon Huard or Jake Plummer are good quarterbacks overall. Its about what they are doing in a given season. Remember, we are talking about the MVP award. Last year, Plummer had a great season statistically, so while he may not be a "good QB", he played like one last year until they got to the playoffs. Huard is doing that right now. Right now, Damon Huard is a good quarterback. I'm not saying that when he retires, people will reminisce over the greatness of Damon Huard. I'm just saying that right now, Damon Huard is a good QB, not mediocre.

I simply disagree. Effectively running an ineffective offense does not equal good in my book.

Is David Carr having an MVP season too?
