Geno Smith, why are people down on him

So I didn't get to see every single game that he played this year but did see most.

He not only seems to have all of the athleticism that you could want in a quarterback but also all of the intangibles in terms of leadership.

On the radio both stations keep talking about him not being in the same class as luck or RGIII , my question is why not???

Here is my reasoning: We all know what type of difference a good coaching staff makes and how it transitions to the players ae. matt cassel with charlie weis

WVA coaching staff is not very good, their offensive line was like Swiss cheese and their defense was possibly the bottom 5% in all of Division I football, putting him consistently in bad situations.

If he had been playing for Alabama, Florida, ND, etc etc people would be touting him like luck or RGIII

I didn't see anything this year from him that would make someone believe that he doesn’t have all of the tools to be an elite QB.

Just on the wrong college team to put his draft stock at #1

Look I'm not saying he is better but Luck had a huge hype machine and had a dad who was in the NFL.

But what about Smith makes him less coming out? Stats were just as good or better with less talent, very smart and a great leader?

You can't help but think there race has something to do with it in some way.

First: Luck ran a pro-style offense and audibled like he was manning. His last year he called his own plays a chunk of the time when they went no huddle.

Second: You really can't compare air raid qb's numbers to any other system. It tends to produce eye-popping numbers for almost any qb.. as seen at

Third: Race. Texas Tech ran white qb's out there year after year in the same system putting up insane numbers and none of them were ever considered top prospects.

IMO the diff between Smith and Luck is smarts & experience. Andrew is a smart player, he has a bit more poise during the worst of times than Geno and he has pro style experience Geno does not have. The first part, though, is what will always separate the two players, I believe, because somewhere in those "smarts" & "poise" is cunning timing & accuracy that is a bit better than what I see in Geno.

All said, these two players will need to work hard to play with the big boys. I got faith in Geno, I expect him to pan out in the NFL.

Not florida, Alabama, or ND... Baylor.

Why is it so hard to accept that Geno isn't as good as Luck or RGIII, but that he's still a very good QB prospect and well worth taking a chance on?

He's got my vote, but I'm not going to expect Luck or RGIII.

Christ RG3 is over-rated.

I like RG3. He's had some nice plays... but he's already been injured as well.
It's not like the Redskins are dominating teams and he's already gotten them to the superbowl. They are on a 5 game winning streak with Cousins pulling out 2 of those.

It isn't that people are "down" on Smith. KC fans are desperate for a QB. We get it. It doesn't mean the flavor of the year is FANTASTIC. The Planet went crazy for Clausen and Sanchez too - they were can't miss, great accuracy, good arm, good system, beat quality teams, etc.

Here is what I see in Smith:

Positives: arm strength seems above average, really good accuracy in a clean pocket on his first reads, decent scrambler, good release time.

Can use improvement: footwork and pocket presence.

Negatives: IMO, when he has to go through progressions he struggles, not great at adapting.

Um no, not true.

A great many people new there were BIG question marks with both Sanchez and Claussen but in the end, the need/want for a QB overrode their initial rational thoughts.

Particularly on Sanchez, a large number of people expressed concern over his lack of starting experience.

Geno Smith is a superior prospect to BOTH of those guys.

When will people stop throwing RG3 a d Luck out there when talking about Geno? It's really old.

He stacks up better that most of the other qbs taken in the last 5 years. One might even be bold enough to say that if you don't include RG3 and Luck, he is THE BEST qb prospect of the last 5 years.
