If Mendoza went 8 innings, there still would have been no one available. You wont have someone warming up in the beginning of the 9th, or after the first walk. Maybe after the 2nd walk, but probably not.

No one would be available, under any circumstances whatsoever in the real world, to relieve Holland after the 3rd batter. Then Holland gets the 4th and 5th guy out, no one is going to relieve him then.

There is absolutely no way to blame this fiasco on Yost.

Sometimes, you have to blame the players, even if you wish every single loss could always be laid at the feet of the manager.

only by your Baseball for Dummies Handbook rules.

Everyone could see he wasn't just walking people, he was struggling with his control.

During the 1st walk, you start to worry
During the 2nd walk, you get somebody warming up
after the 2nd walk, you start playing games to delay to give time for someone else

You don't say 'screw it'

Hard enough for us to win without giving up on games just because of some stupid tradition

I don't think this is unrealistic... but no manager is going to take him out after he obliterated two straight hitters. If Yost pulls Holland after the two strikeouts and the next guy loses the game, people would be destroying him.

Yes, don't get me wrong Holland is dirty, and one hell of a talented pitcher. Herrera is just flat unhittable when he's on, and can overpower even the best hitters. Perfect closer.

During first walk you start to worry? WTF?

Then you get someone up while he's pitching to the second hitter?

And that guy is going to be ready after one batter?

This is just too much.

every single person in the entire baseball world who cashes a paycheck from a MLB team reads that handbook.

You are asking for, not a competent manager, but for someone who is relatively an innovative genius.

Last year Holland had an ERA of 11+ in March/April, then dominated the rest of the year. Maybe he's not comfortable in colder weather?
