Eagles QB Michael Vick on Chiefs coach Andy Reid: ‘It’s just tough seeing him in red’

Eagles QB Michael Vick on Chiefs coach Andy Reid: ‘It’s just tough seeing him in red’
By TEREZ A. PAYLOR
The Kansas City Star
Chiefs coach Andy Reid may not be terribly eager to discuss his return to Philadelphia on Thursday — he’s repeatedly said the showdown is not about him — but at least one Eagle is looking forward to seeing his former coach.

“Like I’ve been telling everybody, it’s just tough seeing him in red,” Eagles quarterback Michael Vick said Tuesday. “I’ve been with coach for the last four years, but it seems like 14 years. That’s a credit to our friendship that we’ve been able to develop. What a great man, what a great man.”

Reid and the Eagles signed Vick in August 2009, shortly after serving 23 months in the U.S. Penitentiary at Leavenworth for running an illegal dogfighting ring.

On Tuesday, Vick was asked where he’d be if it wasn’t for Reid.

“Who knows?” Vick said. “Who knows … and I say that as a person, as a human being, as a player. Coach was able to change the way I thought about a lot of things, the way I looked at life … even when I still made irrational decisions when I was playing there at a high level for him, he still was able to pull me back to say listen, you’re doing wrong, you’re not doing this right.

“So many times I walked out of his office upset, but you’re learning valuable lessons, and those are things every man doesn’t get in his life sometimes. I’m just thankful God put him in my life for the period of time we had to spend together.”

Reid is happy that Vick, 33, believes he has matured.

“I’m happy for him, probably more so as a person than even as a football player, just the fact that he’s a good father, a good husband and he’s a good football player,” Reid said. “Those first two … come before the football part of it in my mind. It’s nice to see what he’s done with his life, with his second chance.”

DT gets his day

The Chiefs will hold a special screening of “Derrick Thomas: A Football Life” on Wednesday at the North Club inside Arrowhead Stadium.

Former Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson, former Thomas teammates Neil Smith, Christian Okoye and others are scheduled to attend and there will be a question-and-answer session with the audience after the screening, which starts at 7:30 p.m. A reception starts at 6:30 p.m.

Rob Gill, who co-produced the film for NFL Films, said the decision to profile Thomas for the series was an easy one. The episode will premiere nationwide at 8 p.m. Sept. 24 on the NFL Network.

“He was one of the most gifted pass rushers in NFL history, so Derrick Thomas ‘the football player’ alone provided enough material to make him a worthy subject,” Gill said. “But it was the multiple layers of Derrick’s life off the field, including his devotion to children’s charities and the military, as well as his untimely death that made his story so unique.”

Tickets are $35, with proceeds benefiting the Derrick Thomas/Neil Smith Third and Long Foundation. For tickets, visit thirdandlong.org.

Brock settles in

Nearly two weeks after being cut by the Chiefs, tight end Kevin Brock is back on the team — and grateful for it.

“I felt like I left a good impression on the coaches,” said Brock, 27. “I’m not going to say I wasn’t worried, because anytime you go home, you’re a little worried. I was just happy to be back.”

Brock, who was signed Monday following injuries to tight ends Anthony Fasano and Travis Kelce, said he’s spent the last few weeks working out at home. He didn’t stop watching the Chiefs, though.

“I saw some of the Jacksonville game with a buddy of mine, I paid attention to it a little bit,” Brock said. “You know, it’s funny watching the game when you kind of know what the plays are. It was a little different.”

Despite being released by the team in early, Brock said he didn’t have any hard feelings then or now.

“These guys are like family, my brothers,” he said. “I’ve been working with these guys since I got here in February, so I want everybody to do good.”

He might get a chance to do good, himself. With Fasano and Kelce banged up, Brock may just find himself on the field Thursday night, when the Chiefs face the Eagles in Philadelphia — which happens to be only a couple hours away from his hometown of Hackensack, New Jersey.

“Me being a Jersey guy, so close to home, I know a lot of people that will be at the game,” said Brock, who added he expects about four or five family members to be there. “I just want to do my job and contribute to a win.”

Injury report

Tight end Anthony Fasano (ankle) did not practice Tuesday, while cornerback Brandon Flowers (knee) and tight end Travis Kelce (knee) were limited.

Tackle Branden Albert, who has a sprained AC joint in his shoulder, was a full participant.

For the Eagles, cornerback Brandon Hughes (hamstring) was the only player who did not practice.

Vick owes Reid alot. How many teams were willing to take a chance on him?
