The Chiefs could go the other way this time around, giving G.M. Scott Pioli a third chance to hire a new head coach.

The prevailing rumor in league circles is that first-year coach Romeo Crennel will be replaced, but that Pioli will remain. In 2009, Pioli hired Todd Haley to coach the team. Haley was fired during his third season on the job.

No one knows for sure what owner Clark Hunt will do. He was facing unrelenting pressure from fans and local media to clean house earlier this season. The Jovan Belcher tragedy caused much of the outcry to diminish.

If Hunt keeps Pioli, his mandate will be clear: Find a quarterback. With five Pro Bowlers on a two-win team, there’s no lack of talent at other positions in Kansas City. But Matt Cassel never has matched his performance in 2008, the year he replaced Tom Brady in New England, and it’s impossible to win in this league without someone who can move the chains by flinging the pig.

The bad news for the Chiefs and Pioli is that they’re a year late to earn a top-two pick. There’s no Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III in 2013. Pioli’s best bet could be to take the best available athlete at the top of the draft, and then to make like Trent Baalke or John Schneider and find a franchise quarterback in round two or three.

If Hunt fires Pioli, the talk is that Bill Polian could become the new G.M. in Kansas City. Some suspect, however, that the Polian rumors trace to Polian himself.

Either way, a looming finish of 2-14 shows that changes are needed in Kansas City. The only question is how extensive they’ll be.

You fire the coach and ride the heinous GM out of town on rails there's a chance the chiefs could respond like they did last year and cost the team a draft spot. At this point the chiefs are a gross football team and their strength is bringing in talent to replace the losers they've employed. I could see why an owner wouldn't be rushing to make changes until the season is decided.

It's an old branch of his tree and some media guys go there on autopilot just as they have in past. These reports are based in conjecture and lack substance. To them being 50% right is a moral win.

No report has been decisive. These guys are hedging their bets so they can be 50% accurate. So Keep Calm and Keep #FirePioli On

I'm longtime chief fan since chiefs drafted my Bama boy DT, RIP, but if they keep pioli and hire frentz as these horrible rumors say I'm done till this whole crew is gone. I also will believe hunt is all about the money and not bout winning. I'll still come on here and read the commentary but I can't put my heart in this anymore.


Clark hunt I beg u let's start fresh new ideas a new philosophy. We arent that far away make the changes necessary to bring this team back!

One wouldn't think so. Nevertheless, I have to admit to a certain amount of uneasiness on this thing. Dr. Evil's media henchmen appear to be hanging tough to the last.

To me, it seems to be a no-brainer. Surely the pundits understand the severity of the situation ... even from afar. Given Pioli's demonstrable incompetence, the fact that his cronies are even floating the possibility that he be retained is troubling.

If this happens, I'm done. Devote more time to Mizzou, which is only marginally better, reading, playing with kids, etc. certainly won't waste any more time with franchise.

Obviously, winning cures everything, but Arrowhead will be dead unless the Chiefs start the season at 4-1 or something like that, with a new QB. It's just hard to see Pioli and Ferentz outsmarting other GMs and HCs enough to be winners.
