Chiefs' offense: "one of the worst in the league, by nearly every measure"

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2013/9...chiefs-offense

some numbers to chew on from arrowhead pride

Quote:
The Chiefs are actually 12th in the league in PPG, at 23.7. But if you take away the 14 points the defense is directly responsible for, that number drops to 19 PPG, which would be tied for 23rd - with the Raiders. The Chiefs are relying on the defense to score points, which isn't good. Defensive scoring is random and shouldn't be part of the game plan. They didn't need Tamba Hali's pick-6 to beat the Jaguars, but they did need Eric Berry's against the Eagles.

They also are just not moving the ball; their 333 yds/gm is 21st in the league and their 4.9 yds/play ranks 25th. "Well Kyle," you may ask, " if the Chiefs offense is so bad, how are they undefeated this year?" That's an excellent question, thank you for asking. The answer is that the defense and special teams are much, much better than we thought.
Quote:
The problem the Chiefs are having is getting to the Red Zone in the first place. They're 30th in yards per drive, with only Tampa Bay and Jacksonville behind them, and Cleveland directly in front of them (not good company to be in). This is a really, really bad offense. But here's the real kicker: the Chiefs' offense has the best starting field position in the NFL this year, and still can't score.
Quote:
The Chiefs average 17 yards per drive better field position than their opponents (ok, ok, 16.95), the best mark in the NFL (2nd table). Only two other teams average more than 10 yards better starting field position than their opponents (New England and Chicago). The Chiefs' average starting line of scrimmage (LOS) is their own 36.97 yard line (best in the NFL), while their opponents average starting LOS is their own 20.02 yard line (also best in the NFL). What all of that means is the Chiefs's offense is handed consistently great starting field position and can't do anything with it, then they let the special teams pin opponents deep in their own territory. The defense bails out the offense by not letting opponents move the ball, giving the offense the ball back with great starting field position. Lather, rinse, repeat.
There's a nice breakdown of our defense against philly over there as well:
http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/9/2...p-kelly-eagles

Quote:
I have to reiterate and emphasize just how much the Chiefs played man to man -- like a ton of it. And they have the secondary to handle it, unlike most teams in the NFL. Specifically, they matched up Sean Smith on Cooper a lot on the outside. If this had been a prize fight, Cooper's corner would have thrown in the towel somewhere around the middle of the second quarter. Smith owned him right up until the end of the game when he started cramping up. Cooper just couldn't shake him, especially on those aforementioned deep routes Kelly had him running all game.

While we're at it, can we get Arrowhead Pride to stop talking about Alex Smith too?

Dane has said everything that ever needs to be said about Smith. Both boards need to just shut up.

Personally, I think play calling gets a big share of the blame. It was even my vote in that poll (not sure if it's public).

That doesn't change the fact that when I watch great offenses, typically part of the reason they are great is because they beat you by being well rounded. If you are gonna stack the box and focus on the running game and short passing game, they throw deep. If you are gonna keep everything in front of you, they run and/or utilize underneath passing.

Alex Smith is the guy we have. He's here for 2 years minimum. If this offense is going to reach the standard that it takes to make and win in the playoffs consistently, he's going to have to do more. Period.

Seriously, this is goddamn hysterical:

I mean there was your bitching in this thread:

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showt...t=Pioli&page=6

And then this one when people dared suggest that your hero scott might be arrogant:

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showt...li#post6112654

This was part of the days you spent sarcastically bemoaning the 'positive' Pioli threads:

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showt...li#post6042796

The staggering butthurt from you in this one - "LEAVE SCOTT ALONE!!":

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showt...li#post6041597

A nice little display of your general assholery whenever someone deigns disagree with you:

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showt...li#post5387142

And then you sticking with brevity:

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showt...24#post5425624

Your bitching in this thread is the most insanely disingenuous thing I've ever seen around here, up to an including Clay giving advice on women and Hootie on civility. You more than anyone excoriated anyone who thought that maybe this Pioli guy isn't really that good afterall. You were in exactly the same spot Dane is now.

And there you go, nailing yourself to the cross.

I don't give a shit that you were wrong on Pioli. But it's laughable that you're calling out people that are tired of you grinding the same axe on Smith after your temper tantrums regarding Pioli.

3. He needs a slot receiver. Again, what caliber?

Do you think when he gets all of those things, he will become a QB capable of spreading a defense? Will he become 300+ yd QB?
1. TE's in the WCO generally account for a minimum of 80 catches. Kevin Brock and Sean McGrath would be lucky to account for half of that.

2. Are you watching the games? Allen is getting punked, Hudson gets his shit pushed in, Asamoah sucks at pass blocking and Fisher has been awful. How about average play?

3. While Cruz and Welker would be nice, someone who will have at least 50 catches.

And to answer your question, no, Alex Smith will not average 300 yards per game.

Joe Flacco averaged 238 per game last year and won a Super Bowl.

That doesn't make us war criminals. But we were all guilty. Every single one of us.
See how easy this is?

My problem isn't the opinion either way. It's the unbridled hypocrisy from TTC in blasting anyone who disagrees with him in this regard.

awesome, the world goes round....

that makes me happy reading that...I had this lingering notion that I had been too hard on pioli, but actually I was pretty reasonable, not the jihadist many think

and so you agree, it is dumb of dane to insist people people shut-up...I mean, you just proved it using me as an example

so we finally agree

Who ****ing cares?

Have you not seen the scatter chart that was posted showing all QB's and passes in the league last year?

It blows the entire theory you have to throw deep to win right out the ****ing window.

Destroys it, demolishes it.

I just don't understand why so many of you guys think there is zero chance we will have an above average offense by the end of the year. Sure, it's not very good now, but when I watch games, I see the O-line getting blown up damn near every play. Personally, I think Alex Smith has played well, and I have some optimism that the Chiefs O will get better. I guess that makes me a True Fan.
