NFL says PI agianst the Chargers was wrong

First off...I will say "No shit".

Second...it's convenient for them to say it now. It kept the Chargers/Chiefs battle for the AFCW title interesting until the end. *cough* ratings...

Third...**** you Chargers

NFL essentially admits making a mistake that aided Chargers in win over Chiefs

Earlier this month, NFL.com writer Adam Rank said the Chargers are the clear favorite in the AFC West, even though the Chiefs have won the division three straight seasons.

Rank said Chargers fans don’t need to worry about this Chiefs in the upcoming season in part because LA won 22-21 at Arrowhead Stadium last December. But at the NFL Media Summit, the NFL essentially admitted it made a huge mistake that helped the Chargers win that game.

Let’s turn the clock back to that game on Dec. 13.

The Chiefs led 21-14, but the Chargers had the ball at the Kansas City 10-yard line with 13 seconds to play. It was third down and Los Angeles was out of timeouts when quarterback Philip Rivers threw a pass to Mike Williams that fell incomplete in the end zone.

A flag was thrown and pass interference was called giving the Chargers the ball at the 1-yard line with 8 seconds to play. Rivers threw a TD pass to Williams, converted a two-point try* and Los Angeles won.

*That was maybe the worst defensive play for the Chiefs in 2018

But Alberto Riveron, the NFL’s Senior Vice President of Officiating, used that play Tuesday as a way to explain the new pass-interference review rule. And he showed the officials got it wrong last December.

Michael Girardi of the NFL Network shared a clip of the play and said Riveron explained that a review would have changed the call to offensive pass interference.

At NFL Media Summit, #NFL SVP of Officiating Al Riveron is showing us the new OPI/DPI review rules. Week 15 between #Chiefs/#Chargers. DPI is called. Automatic review under 2 minutes. This play would be offset. Mike Williams guilty of OPI, negating Fuller's DPI. Down replayed. pic.twitter.com/LxNb2g07JI
— Michael Giardi (@MikeGiardi) June 18, 2019

In the clip, the Chiefs’ Kendall Fuller, who was flagged for the penalty, was clearly upset with the official’s call and his teammates were saying Williams should have been penalized.

That would have given the Chargers the ball at the 20 having to make a third-and-goal call with 8 seconds to play. They could have scored a touchdown, but it’s hard to argue that it wouldn’t have been a much more difficult chore.

Fortunately, that one didn't matter in the long run. We still won the division and HFA. But, it could have ended up leaving us as a wild card. Glad they're admitting the mistake and are making it possible to correct those mistakes now.

I had temporarily forgot about that 2-point play.

I have watched this 273 times. I see Williams pushing off. I still don't see Fuller doing anything.

So, technically the thread title is incorrect. The "PI against the Chargers was wrong" isn't quite right becuase the NFL is now saying that the PI call should have stood as called, but would have been offset by a matching PI call against the Chargers, resulting in replaying the down.

I also don't understand the final sentence. Why would the Chargers have had the ball moved back 10 yards? Halfway through the post it says they had the ball at the 10 with 13 seconds left to play. The Chargers aren't assessed a 10 yard OPI if there is an offsetting defensive PI, which is what they are saying.

So it's Chargers ball on, 3rd and Goal, from the KC 10 yard line, with 8 seconds left.

Ultimately didn't matter right? You guys got the 1 seed, so the loss was irrelevant.

Of course you dont understand my post...the Patriots have never has a late game deciding call go against them...it's how they've been to at least 3 SBs.

Well...actually, they have had exactly ONE game where it happened (2015)...and your fans STILL remember it. Against Denver in Manning's "retire with a ring" campaign..

The only replay I could find suggests Fuller MAY have been holding Williams' left arm down.

There's a real question whether that ball is even catchable in the end zone. It was pretty seriously overthrown.

That's definitely a tough call to go against you and give them the ball at the 1 with a fresh set of downs.

The piece seems a bit confused, as if the call should have been on Williams instead of Fuller, when there actually should have been offsetting penalties.

And let's be honest here... the Chargers were going to score one way or another. The defense had no answers and Phyllis didn't need the helpful flag.

I like how you enjoy avoiding the points I raise by just saying something about old calls involving the Patriots.

You're wrong, and you know it. The offsetting penalties results in replaying the down, 3rd and goal, from the TEN.

Your inability to read, or understand the rulebook -- whichever one applies -- is your problem, not mine.

Yeah, that seems to be what he's misunderstanding. But it's BlackOp, so who knows...

Your problem is about to start...when the officials quit handing NE big games.

It's the same thing that happened to Denver once Manning left...

That fanbase is going to scatter like roaches...

Dude, I have six rings to look back on which....let me think....is like six more than I ever expected to get after year of rooting for the "Patsies". Believe me, whatever problems i have as an NFL fan are first world problems.

And the fanbase can scatter if it wants. I was rooting for them before Parcells/Bledsoe/Kraft turned them around, and I'll root for them after Belichick and Brady have moved on.

Amnorix cant accept that his favorite team is routinely handed big games...everyone knows it except those that are disingenuous. I'm sure he thinks Jesse James TD with 30 seconds left was incomplete too... after he turns, makes a football move with both hands and breaks the TD plane....but the Hogan catch was 100%

AFCCG

4th quarter

Edleman muff - overturned
Hogan trap on 3rd and 8 - uphelp
Phantom roughing - no problem, we got this
Ford neutral zone - Normally, teams are given a warning...as Reid alluded to in the post game. Not this time...

4 beneficial calls late in the game...
