Three to Focus on: Packers @ Chiefs, Week 15

As the Green Bay Packers enter their final road game of the season, coaches and players are starting to embrace the pursuit of perfection. With home field advantage all but sewn up, it could prove hard to maintain an edge over these final three games. So suddenly, the push for 16-0 now becomes a motivator–instead of a distraction.

The Chiefs officially ended the Todd Haley experiment and have installed defensive coordinator and former Browns head coach, Romeo Crennel as the interim. Last year, many teams saw a resurgence after mid-season coaching changes. The Chiefs could be next. Now a longshot for the NFC West division title and a playoff berth, Kansas City could certainly be finding their own motivation in the Packers’ current win streak, as in being the team that ends it.

Randall Cobb vs. Javier Arenas

Given Green Bay’s abundance of receiving talent, the loss of Greg Jennings until, at least, the playoffs isn’t likely to slow down the Packers’ offensive juggernaut. All wideouts will likely see their snap counts increase, but watch for rookie Randall Cobb to emerge. If it wasn’t for the talent in front of him, he’d likely be in the discussion for the top rookie wide receiver. Cobb has had most of his success on short routes that give him the chance for a quick catch and run. His 8.9 YAC/Rec is second highest in the league and his ratio of six forced missed tackles in only 19 receptions is among the NFL’s best. His four drops and the stiff competition for targets have hurt his overall grade for the year (-2.8), but now with more opportunities, Cobb is poised to break out. His work on special teams has also been a welcome change for Green Bay, with his two touchdowns and return averages (12.5 punt and 28.0 kickoff) all ranking among the Top 10 in the league.

With Cobb getting 58% of his snaps from the slot position, there’s a good chance he’ll be matching up with last year’s second round pick, Javier Arenas. Arenas is the primary slot cornerback in the Chiefs’ nickel defense and has been exceptional when he sees the field (+5.0 overall.) His 56.7 NFL QB rating on passes thrown into his coverage is best among Kansas City CBs and tied for 10th in the NFL. He has yet to allow a touchdown, and to top it off, has generated seven total QB pressures on a mere 18 pass rush attempts.

D.J. Smith vs. Chiefs Running Backs

Rookie sixth round pick D.J. Smith (+4.8) made our “Had a Bad Day” team after a miserable starting debut against the Giants two weeks ago, only to land on our All-PFF team one week later. Forced into a starting role with both A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop nursing calf injuries, Smith has had significantly more impact in his 192 snaps (eight stops, six total pressures and 19 tackles) than Hawk has had in 681 snaps (20 stops, 19 total pressures and 43 tackles). Hawk (+1.0) has been his normal, “solid” self this season and watching him play alongside Bishop (+8.2) has only reinforced the notion that the Packers were foolish to let Bishop languish on the bench in 2008 and 2009. With Hawk a likely return this week, we now get to see a side-by-side comparison with Smith. If Smith continues to outperform his teammate, there could be linebacker controversy brewing yet again in Green Bay.

The Chiefs have taken a true running back-by-committee approach since Jamaal Charles went down in Week 1. Dexter McCluster is getting the majority of the snaps (45%) followed by Jackie Battle (30%) and Thomas Jones (25%.) McCluster (+3.3 overall) is their third-down back and gets most of the opportunities in the passing game. He hasn’t done all that much with his 35 receptions, as only 10 have resulted in a first down. His 1.04 Yards per Pass Route is near the bottom among NFL RBs.

When Kansas City wants to run, they usually turn to Jones or Battle. Jones appears to be nearing the end of the line after 11 productive years in the league. His -5.2 run grade is a reflection of his inability to make defenders miss (only 3 MT forced this season) and to pick up the tough yards. His 1.4 Yards after Contact per Attempt (Yco/Att) is by far the worst in the league. Battle has been the best pure runner of the bunch (+3.5 run), and he leads the other two in Yco/Att and in our Elusive Rating, but has seen a reduction in snaps over the last several weeks.

Round 2: Kyle Orton vs. Packers Secondary

One of Crennel’s first moves was to send Tyler Palko (-14.7) back to the bench and in doing so, acknowledging what Haley would not – that Palko isn’t starting QB material. If his hand is healthy, Kyle Orton will make his second start against the Packers this year. The first matchup occurred in Week 4 when Orton was still with the Broncos. It was a 49-23 rout which Orton jumpstarted early in the first quarter with a poor decision – a telegraphed short out pass that ended with a Charles Woodson interception return for a touchdown. He was able to keep Denver in the game for the almost two quarters, connecting on several deep passes, but missed additional scoring opportunities with some overthrows and added two more interceptions.

The Packers defense gave him plenty of time in the pocket, only able to pressure Orton on six of his 34 drop backs. The secondary paid the price, with Tramon Williams (-1.4 coverage) getting picked on the most, giving up six receptions for 63 yards. Morgan Burnett (-1.1) and Sam Shields (-1.1) both gave up touchdowns. The Chiefs have one of the league’s better offensive lines in pass protection. If they can give Orton time to operate, perhaps they can keep things close.

We know we have a decent O-Line right now.. but i'm pretty confident Barry Richardson is the worst starting RT in the league

What's sad is that we have allowed 109 pressures and 16 sacks.

Barry Richardson has given up 34 of those pressures and 7 of those sacks.

We have a lot of problems in pass protection that are not the OLs fault.

Sacks allowed:

Cassel - 5
O'Connell - 2
Pope - 1
Palko - 1
McClain - 1

That's 10 extra sacks right there.

Yeah they have been awful.

The only guy on our line who can run block at an acceptable level is Albert.

We need to hope Asamoah improves and Hudson is not another Pioli bust.
