So, you go to an annual meeting; listen to their pitch for 45 minutes and mark 0 down if you're so inclined.

It isn't that difficult. My last company was big into the UW stuff. Some people gave a little, some gave a lot, and some gave none. Never felt any pressure other than the kind I'd put on myself to give to a charity.

I don't think anyone felt all that harassed to sit in a break room and listen to a spiel.

You're lucky, because at a lot of places there's an oppressive multi-week campaign. That's what I was starting a thread crabbing about.

Annoyed by them at work and wondered if other people have the same experience?

Anyway, United Way wanted nothing to do with this event so we gave the money to some charity or another. I never understood if they were wary of Rock music or motorcycles. I've never contributed a dime to them since...
Probably the potential of large-scale death and injury was a turn off.

They probably would have taken your $ afterward but didn't want their name used with something that had the potential for headline-making disaster and liability.

But clearly your employer was the gestapo and not UW.

My experience with a large company involved with UW was that all the VPs wanted their department to have 100% participation. Participation meant going to the website and either donating or not donating. I never felt pressure to donate. But there was pressure to at least decide one way or another so they could mark you off.

I did. And the pressure gets worse as you move up the ladder. At some point it is more than just a request and it will bite you on the ass for not giving in. HR can kiss ass. Upper Management has the list, sorted by position and resorted by amount.

"Free to" doesn't mean "should."

Obviously, the topic is not the issue but the thread title which is quickly refuted by the thread starter himself.

Also, this is a discussion board and I'm free to say what I want regardless of your need to be prissy about what I'm saying.
