Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

I was assured last night to just wait. They haven't announced all the comp yet, But there were other teams willing to trade for Alex Smith. Said he expects the 49ers also gave up a mid round pick this year as well.

Credited new FO and Clark with implementing a plan. Believes that plan is a vet and draft pick. Believed Eagles were a team the Chiefs were still in touch with. Clark is way more involved this year. Wants to bring winning back to KC and has made clear to everyone that is his priority. Chiefs had to get in 2nd rd to get their guy, but believe they can get the most from Alex Smith. He was the best vet coming avail. They do still want to draft a QB. But rather he sit and learn, develop more. Chiefs liked the way Smith helped mentor Kaepernick, and credited Smith with helping him read and look at defenses. Had the best mental approach to the game out of anyone coming available. The Chiefs knew they needed that and went out and got him.

On the draft, Chiefs were excited about their picks, and would be looking to acquire more. Thinks Chiefs are also really high on the OL in this draft, and have spent a lot of time looking around Luke Joeckel. He said he had no idea who they would decide though, but they think they get a "difference maker". Nothing about Geno...and I asked, but did say they were very thorough, and have spent a lot of time looking very long and hard at all the QB's. The Alex Smith trade shows they will go after who they think will help them, and if it is Geno, then they would get him.

The Chiefs were the last team to leave each day of the drills, and also spent more time than any other team looking at the D backs. Reid is very hands on with the scouts, likes to scout with them so they are all on the same page.

He said he believes they are talking to more than one team and he wouldn't be surprised if they were able to trade back.

That was the thick of it. It made me feel a little better so I thought I'd share.
How "inside" is your source...?

And can you elaborate on the part about the Eagles....Foles?

I feel the same way. We've drafted a lot of OL in the first rd. The greatest line in the NFL couldn't win a playoff game.

Yeah, I got that feeling as well, also wouldn't be surprise if they tried to trade back to try and get OL and CB in 1st.

I'm still hoping they amaze the fans and give Geno a shot.

They're trading up for Geno Smith. If he's suddenly being mocked going to the Raiders at #3 the 1st pick should become a commodity.

Again, it ALL hinges on what the actual trade turns out to be. And i really don't want to lose Albert. And i think that letting albert go and drafting any OT is a complete waste of a pick. You mentioned impact player, but if we trade down as expected, what impact player outside of QB is there? Patterson?

I guess the fact that they HAVE a plan makes me feel okay until we see what that plan actually is come draft day. If we somehow come away in the first with a WR/CB after gathering extra picks from trading down, I guess that's okay...not what I would have REALLY wanted, but okay...

It's a good source. Didn't elaborate about Eagles. I assumed Foles, but could be about trading back...Would be wild if it was something with both using Foles as part of comp. It could just be exploring options.
At least it appears this FO does its due diligence.

Just had to jump in here...

...that's serious revisionist history.

Everyone ASSUMED that Alex was going to resign with SF (including Alex himself) so he didn't make any trips.

The 49ers were in the middle of finding out if they could get Manning. When that became public knowledge is when Alex began looking at other teams.

When Manning signed in Denver and the Dolphins brought in Alex it was clear to the Doplhins that he wanted to stay in SF.

Peeps keep making this out like nobody had any interest in Alex but that isn't the case. The situation was that he wanted to stay in SF and everyone assumed that was what was going to happen until the flirtation with Manning became public.

Its come out since that Reid was interested in Alex LAST year but that wasn't widely publicised at the time.

Swapping one OL for another is not something I view as an upgrade either. I also don't think any OL is any kind of an "impact player", or would make a big impact at all for this team.

Is a rookie going to handle guys like Von Miller so much better than Albert? I too would much rather pay Albert and get Geno

Yes well I don't get the whole 30 years since drafting a QB in the 1st round thing myself. Figure that one out and I bet you can figure out the drafting a LT and signing Albert to top 10 LT money.

It reminds me a little of last year when the chiefs blew smoke up the fans ass' saying they wanted to keep Carr and Rout last year. Total BS

NFL Network's Scott ***** predicted on Total Access Thursday night that the Chiefs will use the franchise tag to retain Dwayne Bowe and let Branden Albert walk in free agency. ***** has special insight because he was Kansas City's GM from 2009-2012. He also noted the "buyer's market" at offensive tackle; both the draft and free agency are stocked with starting-caliber left tackles. Should Albert hit free agency, look for the Bears to show interest. Chicago is tackle needy, and GM Phil Emery was Kansas City's scouting director when the Chiefs drafted Albert.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid referred to free agent LT Branden Albert's 2012 back problems as a "fairly significant injury."The injury only cost Albert three games, but Reid's comments hint it's a more serious issue than the number of missed games indicate. "So we've kind of got to work through that," Reid said. "Our doctors were able to evaluate him, we're talking through it and we'll kind of reconvene after (the Combine)." There have been rumors that the Chiefs won't re-sign Albert because of the injury.

Chiefs GM John Dorsey says the team has had "ongoing communications" with free agent LT Branden Albert. Albert was a college guard, but Dorsey also indicated he views the 28-year-old as a left tackle, long term. "It will be an ongoing communication with his representatives," said Dorsey, "and as we get into free agency, we will see where that is." The Chiefs remain concerned with Albert's 2012 back injury.

Chiefs GM John Dorsey said drafting Texas A&M LT Luke Joeckel would not prevent him from re-signing free agent Branden Albert. Albert's natural position is left tackle as well, but Dorsey seems to be suggesting a position change. "Who's to say both of those guys are locked in to playing left tackle? Maybe one plays left guard, center, right guard, right tackle. You put your best five offensive linemen out there," he said. As one of the few teams significantly under the salary cap, the Chiefs can certainly afford to bring back Albert. The status of his back injury will be a pivotal factor.

If we let Albert go and draft Joeckel, we might as well have kept Pioli.

Seriously.
