WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.

George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.

"George was brave -- he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.

"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."

One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him -- one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.

South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.

In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.

Give me a break. A generalization like that is idiocy at best.

Pitbulls are great dogs and are great family pets. As long as the dog is properly trained and kept in an enclosure (yard with a tall fence), there is nothing wrong with them.

The problem stems from people who abuse, neglect, and train the dogs to be ferocious. ANY dog that has been treated badly and left to wander the streets on its own could have, and have, done the exact same thing.

I can see what you might be getting at tho. They are both animals that are commonly found in the wild so therefore they have similar characteristics. Wait.... they don't.

I was speaking figuratively but i guess you can't sense that.

Most dogs have a "wild genetic temperament". They have it because they were not always domestic creatures.

Put any dog in a situation it has been abandoned in an urban environment, is hungry, and sees a small defenseless child.... the same thing will happen damn near every time.

To say that happened ONLY because the dog was a pit is just silly. It happened because a person was not responsible and kept the animal properly controlled.

yeah they do. I was going down to play basketball with my cousin in 7th grade now to a place called the munchenburger center when the huge pit bulls started attacking up. Whe kicked and fought to get him free but it was no use he had bites and brusing up and down the arm. My dad and uncle went over to the fella who owned them and he said to me "Grab your rake!" So we went over there armed with rakes and gave him the business. That was 15 years ago this may and I think pit bulls are mean.
