If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

Reid wanted Smith. Apparently everybody knew he wanted him badly. It was the worst kept secret through February. There were early reports about it but people on this board dismissed the "rumors" because they didn't want to face the reality that yet another regime wasn't going to draft a QB.

Reid and Dorsey paid the price that San Fran demanded because they believe Smith is worth it. The sooner people accept the fact that Reid/Dorsey are going to treat Smith the exact same way Pioli treated Cassel, the better.

They needed QB and coaching help... and likely got it.

There's a difference between being blind and expecting an immediate SB versus finding SOME optimism and a wait-and-see mindset.

That is the only part that elicits such extreme negativity from both "sides."

I don't see anyone screaming "SB bound this season!!!", but I do see lots of people screaming "we iz doomed!!!". And that's the sad and divisive element happening here.

After looking over other KC forums, I was really surprised when I read so much gloom-n-doom on this one.
I can only find hope and optimism in an 8-10 win season if we see legitimate signs that Alex Smith can be better in KC than he has been in the past and be the REASON his team wills games rather than merely not being the reason they lose. Or if the defense blossoms into a truly elite unit. Or if lightning strikes Tyler Bray and he miraculously looks like a future star. Basically, if it looks like that 8-10 win season is building to something better.

8-10 wins with the same Alex Smith we saw in San Francisco (pretty QBR, lots of sacks, no chances taken, decreasing success as pass attempts climb) is not a ray of light. You can't win anything of consequence with that guy unless you have an elite D.

"not being horrible" is just not enough for me.

In fact, I'd rather win 2 games than 8 games, unless the 8-win season is that of a young team starting to find its legs. Considering the Chiefs roster and how many experienced, established NFL players at on it, I don't think that would really apply to an 8-win 2013 Chiefs team.

Alex may very well not be a remarkable QB, but his experience and proven NFL play (at least in recent years) would make me think EVERY football mind around the country would disagree with the quoted above.

It took a previous 2nd round pick 1 1/2 years to dethrone that MOUNTAIN of experience and proven mediocrity.

Kaepernick proved too dynamic to keep on the bench. He usurped what was a top 5 quarterback in efficiency at that time. Most coaches would not have made such a move, but Harbaugh is a pretty wild character.

I see that you are not gonna budge on your thinking, so I'll happily stop trying with you. Many 49ers fans with your lack of respect to Alex came back in 2011 and 2012 to offer their apologies for misjudging him. You likely will too, unless you just refuse to own up be accountable for getting this one wrong.

I'll proudly own up to this if Alex Smith wins a SB in KC.

But he couldn't do it on probably the best roster in football, so...

If you want to search back 2 years ago, I was wanting Alex Smith when I thought he was done in SF and was going to be cut with the arrival of Harbaugh. I thought he could be a good stop gap to replace Cassel and groom someone under him... like Harbaugh used him for. That was then, when I thought he could have been had for simply a low end starting QB contract. This is now, after trading the #34 pick and likely a 2014 #2.

You won't have anything to be proud of if that happens, although I'm sure you'll do a 180 and jump on the bandwagon by then.
