the Chargers didn't prove anything to me other than the fact LT has GAPING holes to run through and Lorenzo Neal deserves MVP consideration.

Bottom line we lost to a better football team
Yep!
And we lost to a better team last week as well. And the week before? Well, that one might be up for debate.... sad as that seems. |

The Chargers are clearly a better team this year.
But are we headed in the right direction? The defense still has some of the same fatal flaws that have been nagging us for 6 years now and the offense is regressing at an alarming rate. My preseason concerns about the coaching philosophy are not relieved either. |

My point was this... San Diego is a better football team. Baltimore is a better football team. And in all reality, we are probably closer to being the Browns class than being in the Chargers and Ravens position. Shoot, we were nearly beaten at home by the Raiders, and will probably have our hands full with them again on Saturday night no matter if it is Green or Huard at the controls. |

Allen, DJ, Hali - these guys are young and play well enough that we don't really have to consider replacing them. Defensive players that we need to join that group: Pollard and Page - if these guys can play at the level of the top 3, then I think the rehab of our defense will be on its way. Defensive players that are temporarily filling a gap: Mitchell, Reed, Edwards, Wesley - these guys are good enough to not throw on the scrap heap, but we need better play from at least 2 out of 4 of thes positions to move up to a top level defense. Maybe one of the young safeties can supass Wesley here? Law and Surtain - these guys play fine, but they are on the back side of their careers. They aren't guys you can build a defense around. CB is a position where we need injection of talented youth. We don't need Champ Baily type corners to play the cover 2, but we can't put Bennie Sapp back there either. Defensive players that are a priority to be replaced Bell and Knight - we have to have better play from the safties in general and the ORLB position. So we have between 3 to 5 of the eleven starters that we need long term. We have some other people that make the defense work in the mean time, but will have to be replaced soon either due to age or the desire to improve. The defense has made strides, but still needs a large injection of young talented personell. The situation on the offenseive side of the ball is even worse. |
