Andy Reid brings detail to Kansas City

Nice little article about Reid's "live" practices.

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post...to-kansas-city

Quote:
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs are breaking training camp in the Andy Reid era for the first time.

The team had their last practice of camp Wednesday. After a planned walk-through on Thursday, they'll head back to Kansas City to prepare for the regular season.

I got a chance to chat with Pro Bowl linebackers Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali before camp broke. The two stars are like virtually every other player on this roster – they rave about playing under Reid.

“I know spirits are high in 31 other places, but we feel great,” Johnson said. “It was a great camp. Great.”

Both veterans pointed out details of Reid’s camp that stood out to them. Johnson said he was amazed that Reid, who came to Kansas City after 14 years in Philadelphia, had the team practice “live” so extensively every day. Often, teams scrimmage near the goal line.

While practice was controlled, Reid wanted his players to simulate game action every day in many different situations. It worked. Several players thought the preseason opener at New Orleans on Friday was slower than usual because they were used to the pace.

“It just puts you in better position to make plays,” Johnson said. “It’s invaluable.”

Hali was impressed by Reid’s schedule. The team had the same routine every day: Practice started at 8:15 a.m., and then players would hit the classroom later in the day. Many NFL teams rotate the daily schedule.

“It gave you a chance to correct your mistakes easier,” Hali said. “It was great to go back and see what we did wrong and then the next day on the field, improve from it … It meant we made less mistakes throughout camp. It’s just the little things that coach Reid does that has made us a better team.”

I don't think they'll pass.

I don't think we'll pick in the top 5 the entire time they're here and even if they're in love with a future QB they won't pay the price to move up...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Jesus, jumpin' Christ on the cross, that's the most succinct and to the point four sentences on this subject I've read. It's worth remembering every single time one of the 'I hate Alex Smith' guys shits all over every thread all season long.

They wanted exactly the Jets QB situation. Watch and learn, y'all.

I tend to agree.

I don't think they'd pass on a luck or elway, but I don't think that qb will be at the top of the wish list either

Alex's salary, as it stands, probably wouldn't be a hindrance. You are correct there. I do expect that number to change at some point in the next two years, however. Pessimistic, I know, but I've been conditioned by this team and I have seen this movie before.

And I'm not sure that Dorsey/Reid will pass on a no-brainer but I do believe that they will lack the necessary resources and determination to acquire that player.

This team will likely win between 6 and 10 games this year which will likely put them out of reach of the top prospects. Do you believe that Dorsey/Reid will trade up for a no-brainer? I don't. Remember, they have already committed a second round pick this year and either a second or third next year to the qb position. Will they really dedicate more high draft picks to the qb position next year? I doubt it very much.

If they win 10 games we probably don't need a qb

They drafted a left tackle when they had a left tackle.

Doesn't that say it all?

To be quite honest, I think they ****ed that all up but that's just me. Either trade Albert or sign him and draft someone else.

Disagree with you, there. The Chiefs won 10 games with Cassel (yes, I realize Smith is not Cassel) and still obviously needed a qb. Hell, teams have won much more than that and still needed a qb. Winning 10 games is not a foolproof indicator that a team is set at the qb position.

I don't think that "says it all" but it might say something. I suppose none of us (pro or anti Smith trade) know at the moment... we can only speculate. I fully admit I am jaded, but the Chiefs history is against them.

Tell you what, if you are correct and Dorsey/Reid draft a legit qbotf in next year's draft, I will buy you an ice cream sandwich.

I agree and have said so several times.

But if that move doesn't prove that they'll take the best player available, even if that player happens to be a QB, I don't know what will convince people otherwise.

I would agree.

However, I don't think that any team takes solely "bpa", there's always some sort of need there

Clark has final say.

Clark will never, EVER, trade what is necessary to get a top QB in the draft.

Ever...
