Andy Reid brings detail to Kansas City

Nice little article about Reid's "live" practices.

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post...to-kansas-city

Quote:
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs are breaking training camp in the Andy Reid era for the first time.

The team had their last practice of camp Wednesday. After a planned walk-through on Thursday, they'll head back to Kansas City to prepare for the regular season.

I got a chance to chat with Pro Bowl linebackers Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali before camp broke. The two stars are like virtually every other player on this roster – they rave about playing under Reid.

“I know spirits are high in 31 other places, but we feel great,” Johnson said. “It was a great camp. Great.”

Both veterans pointed out details of Reid’s camp that stood out to them. Johnson said he was amazed that Reid, who came to Kansas City after 14 years in Philadelphia, had the team practice “live” so extensively every day. Often, teams scrimmage near the goal line.

While practice was controlled, Reid wanted his players to simulate game action every day in many different situations. It worked. Several players thought the preseason opener at New Orleans on Friday was slower than usual because they were used to the pace.

“It just puts you in better position to make plays,” Johnson said. “It’s invaluable.”

Hali was impressed by Reid’s schedule. The team had the same routine every day: Practice started at 8:15 a.m., and then players would hit the classroom later in the day. Many NFL teams rotate the daily schedule.

“It gave you a chance to correct your mistakes easier,” Hali said. “It was great to go back and see what we did wrong and then the next day on the field, improve from it … It meant we made less mistakes throughout camp. It’s just the little things that coach Reid does that has made us a better team.”

Don't get me wrong, he is a good young QB with a lot of promise. I just don't think he's GREAT yet. I'ld still choose Luck over him every day.
He's GREAT for certain. The issue here isn't his passing or running skills but how to design plays to take advantage of his unique skillet while protecting him from injury.

If you don't think he's "great" then clearly, you didn't watch many complete Redskins games last year.

I wouldn't say he's being curtailed, he just needs to be smarter about running.

I also wouldn't take Andrew "The Pick Machine" Luck over him yet.

I think Reid would trade Smith for Aaron Rogers right now, and I Think they would've give Green Bay two firsts for him as well. They gave up what the going rate for under thiry quality starting QB is. The alternative this year would've been the Jets QB situation, and I don't want the Jets QB situation.

His biggest hurdle in the NFL will be injuries.

He better learn to slide yesterday...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Not yet he isn't. That has to be determined by successes achieved by players. RGIII has a good shot at it. His injuries have already given doubt to how long he can last and therefore will be able to accomplish. Most of the players that make it to the NFL are physical freaks anyways or they wouldn't be here.

Man I don't know. I use to would have agreed with this. I think the player/person is and has been out there. They were merely overlooked. I am not saying it wasn't intentional either. I just think that with the changing of the offensive scheme that teams in the NFL and the NFL seems to be heading is going to make for more emphasis to be put on finding players more like RGIII than on a Matt Ryan type.
The more success that these types of QBs have and the more exciting it makes the NFL the more it drives teams and players to find and develop that skill type.

It's impossible to "develop" a skill based on instinct.

You can teach a guy to read defenses, to throw away the ball, to take chances in tight windows and a play book.

You CANNOT teach intangibles like leadership, feel for the game, how to create plays or running vision and esacpability.

Those are innate abilities and what makes special players special.

On top of that both RGIII and Luck had rare "football IQ's."

I wondered about my word usage there.

Coaches have to start looking for and playing kids with the traits of an RGIII more often at youth levels that doesn't happen now. That is the development that I was referring to.

So if the Chiefs can't have that option then they shouldn't even play. Players shouldn't want to play for the other 25 teams that doesn't have this once in a generation QB. Get ****ing real with your expectations.
Never have I said that. What I would say is that the Chiefs shouldn't commit so many resources (draft picks, dollars, years) to a player like Smith. I've said it before: if the Chiefs had acquired Alex Smith for free, I still wouldn't be excited about this team. Given what the team has paid to acquire Smith realistically means that 1)they won't even be looking for that once-in-a-generation player in the next few years and 2)they likely don't have the resources to acquire that player, anyway.

And once again, you cannot "develop" football instinct and natural ability any more than you can develop a non-musical tone deaf person into a world class violinist.

I think most did in one form or another. But with no malice. It was necessary to flush this team of some horrible infestation in order to rise again and take our place that rightly belongs to the KC Chiefs!!!

$8.5 million per year is a pittance for a starting QB.

And you're crazy if you think Andy Reid and John Dorsey will pass on a no-brainier QB in the future.

So coaches can't develop or learn? Coaches have to figure out that the old statuesque QB is no longer what the NFL or colleges want.
Players with RGIIIs skill set and talents have been ignored because that wasn't seen as desirable.
