Looking for a new computer for my boss
Do packages not come with monitors anymore? I'm not looking for something super geeky. Just a basic tower desktop, mouse, keyboard, speakers, and monitor.

Would like for it to have:

Windows 7 Professional
Good processor
around 6 GB RAM
Looking for a 17" monitor

Want to keep the price between $600-700 for everything, if possible.

Suggestions?

A 17" monitor is freaking TINY by today's standards. You're much better off getting a 20-23.

You better hope the boss croaks before this system does or you will be faced with trying to teach him how to use Windows 8 ... that will not be fun.

You're tellin' me. I think the one I found was an 18.5. His current computer is at least 7 years old.

It happens. I've had more Seagate drives fail than any other drive manufacturer (and by a wide margin) to the point where I'll never again purchase their products.

My experience with ASUS products has been excellent. When I "strayed" and purchased Gigabyte boards, I regretted it because I had three fail within 18 months. Yet others I know have had no such issues.

I believe I can agree with that. ASUS is usually top 3 in reliability, so I suppose I could just be the crazy man up on the box. I was really excited about the Nexus 7 when I read the reviews. That's life I guess.

be aware that Dell computers often come low profile

The case is extra skinny which means all the 'cards' are not default size.

no biggie if you are getting an all-in-one motherboard type computer


but buying a new graphics or sound card later means you have to buy low profile. You generally don't get all the sale prices on low profile stuff.

And I spent over 5 minutes trying to cut and paste it into CP, but the damn image and character limits kept it from working. That's as good as you get.

Buy an Optiplex 3010. 21" monitor, $702.

This. Years ago I bought an Epox mobo, it died. I then bought ASUS, flawless for years. My next build ASUS mobo, has been flawless except the time I screwed up my bios by trying to flash an older bios over a new one, but ASUS sent me a bios chip within two days for ~$20. ASUS is worth the extra$.

My buddy bought a newegg combo build that came with a MSI mobo 2 years ago, it just died. When fixing his rig, I made him buy ASUS.

PS: NEVER buy Corsair products, I HATE them with a passion!

I have an iPad 2 and I think it's a joke. But then again, I dislike Apple products altogether (even though we own three iPhone 4s's and two iPads).

I truly dislike Apple's OS. I also think it sucks that Apple doesn't support flash and that in many cases, you have to use half-assed "apps" in order to view a website even close to how's it's viewed on a PC.

Blech.
You may already know this, but Apple's desktop and laptop OS, OS X, does support flash. It's just their mobile devices (ipod, iphone, ipad) that doesn't.
