Question: Meat Prices

Meat Prices I predict will go up by 50% by 2009. At what stage would you alter your diet if say a $15 package of ribeye steaks spikes to $20, $25,$30. A $30 meal at a restaurant goes to $45. A Mcdonalds Big Mac comb meal goes to $8. At what point do we go to rice and beans ?

Wonder when people will figure out that Ethanol isn't saving us anything.

Very good question. There are some value meals at the fast food places that are pushing 6 dollars now when you super-size, biggie-size or king-size it.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the prices initially went up because of cost, but then went down because of lack of demand! Could that be a possibility?

The price of fresh fruit & vegetables will climb as well. A nation of fat people will only get fatter, as mostly cheap food is bad for you

Yeah, because a mildly cheaper, mildy cleaner running combustion engine is going to save the environment.

It's already happening. The price of milk and eggs have already gone up that much. The price of farmland is hitting record highs.

A gallon of ethanol contains ~35% less energy than a gallon of gasoline. Therefore, MPG decreases proportionally.

The cost of food production is rising because of the demand ethanol production is putting on farmland.

Ethanol producers have a wide enough profit margin to continue to absorb rising corn prices and still compete.

Livestock producers don't have the same amount of wiggle room. Every time the value of farmland goes up, so does the value of the feed it could be producing.

Essentially, Ethanol producers can afford to continue to drive up the price of farmland without adjusting the price of their fuel. Livestock producers have to pass that cost on to consumers.

In other news, gasoline is $0.81 higher per gallon now than it was last year at this time.

That should make your sphincter tingle.
