Would Tony Romo be worth the risk?

Saw this chatted about the other day in another thread, but after his press conference today figured it is a relevant topic.

With Romo essentially out the door in Dallas this coming offseason, would he be worth the gamble to cut ties with Alex after this year and roll the dice on a fragile but effective QB like Tony?

It feels like the only thing holding this team back is an aggressive QB who can actually win you games instead of simply not losing them. Also, if the Chiefs don't go far this year, it's inevitably going to be Alex's fault (or at least that's what CP is going to tell me).

Interested to get some takes on here since I've seen multiple threads get derailed just so people could complain about Alex. I dont think KC should/would because of the success Alex has had here and having to rely on the health and transition to Romo, but at the same time understand the stance of why they should go for him. Also, considering that the favorite to nab him would probably be Denver, so at the same time do you risk letting him go to a rival and play him twice a year?

The Cowboys WERE mediocre with him at QB. In fact, the only reason they were even considered mediocre was because of how good Tony Romo was. They were a 4 win team yearly without him.

Romo has never gotten a fair shake because of his 'dudebro' personality early in his career.

That guy is a damn good quarterback and would raise the ceiling of this team termendously. Yes, he'd come with some risk, but when the order of the day is 'beat Brady', the risk is worth taking.

If you can keep Foles in here, the potential drop off from Smith to Foles is worth the upshot of Romo over Smith. Tony Romo is an excellent quarterback and would be exactly what this team needs to get over the hump.

I think its important to remember that Romo has never played in a WCO, it'd take him a while to become proficient in it

I'm fully expecting the Cowboys to take the "classy route" of letting him go this offseason. Not only would they get the good publicity of letting him ride off into the sunset with a team of his choice, but I think they would also gain around $6 mil in cap space by cutting him.

Romo would be $19M dead cap if they cut him for 2017, vs the $24M to keep him... Jerry isn't just going to be a nice guy there, he'll keep him if he can't trade him, just in case Dak were to get hurt.

Cowboys have Dak for $2.7M total over 4 years... no need to eat 2.5X that in being nice to Romo.

Who would trade for that contract though? I dont see the benefit of hoarding him on the bench with the highest contract on the team just in case Dak goes down. I think they'll go the route the Colts did with Peyton and go forward with their new franchise guy.

I would be down only if:

We got him as a free agent, no trade unless a 5th or lower.
Smith and foles are traded or released.
We draft a qb in the 1st or 2nd.
Andy gives up playcalling or any input on to playcalling.
Rest of picks are for oline. We will need them to keep him healthy. If not its bray or new qb time.


But realistically we still have smith for a couple years. And I have accepted that. At least we got a playoff win.
