If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

He can't take complete advantage of that intellect because as you said, he makes safe decisions. He is risk averse and isn't willing to take a gamble when the game is on the line and calls for taking a gamble. He plays it safe to the last whistle.

There are a few exceptions to this and the Saints game is THE exception tha proves the rule.

You are dead right. He plays it safe. No risk, no reward.
I hate you, you know this, like literally, if i were ever to see you crossing the street, i would run you over, back up over you, and burn a hole in my tires on your face.

How ever, this post was the first that I have ever read that accurately describes alex smith.

With one exception. His last full game as a 49er, remember that one? He did things we had never seen him do, like that pass to crabtree in the endzone to crabs, where he trusted crabs, and he went up over peterson for that td? That was the alex smith that he has to be if he is going to be successful. He has to as crabs said after the NFCCG, "give a guy a chance to make a play." Good post.

I think he's been covered.

We've gone over about every meaningful aspect of his game.

Yet Jim Harbaugh let Kaepernick make plays with both his arm and legs so call this statement out. If what you say is true then Jim Harbaugh had no trust in Alex Smith and anything you say to prop up Alex Smith is a joke. Jim Harbaugh put trust in Kaepernick that he couldn't do with Alex Smith. He allowed Kaepernick to make plays with his arm down field why didn't he let Alex Smith do the same?

Because Alex was a $3it QB that REFUSED to make the mistake and to rely on instinct.

Kaepernick lives off just that...

The irony is, had Alex been the QB on that final 4th quarter SB drive? Alex likely would have won the game. They are just 2 different QBs. One is a physical freak that can backyard-ball his way to some success.. but failed when it most counted in reading defenses and executing. Alex is physically limited when compared to Kaepernick, but reads defenses well and generally comes through in the clutch.

Kaepernick really didn't do THAT much differently than Smith.. but he does have freakish ability to separate himself from a pass rusher and take off like he's got 4.3 speed.

You should try and understand that (again) our offense was just evolving in Alex's first two years of Jim's new system. When Kaepernick came in, things were much more ironed out and everyone was getting the hang of things. Defenses also knew Kaepernick was gifted.. but they underestimated just how gifted, and he made them pay.

He did fail when it most counted though... and it's all speculative, but I doubt Alex would have sailed that endzone pass to Crabtree... nor would he have checked out of two runs and passed the ball to the wrong targets when there were others open. He'll learn... but ouch.

Harbaugh trusted Alex to teach his system to the players and get that offense started. Then, he pulled Alex the first chance he got (concussion) to put the more dynamic QB in... his QB... when things were settling in.

KC got a good QB to help get them going. Will Alex be more than that stop-gap? Maybe yes... maybe no. He is a good QB though... but if you or others are intent on this Chicken Little approach? Hey... do proceed.

I didn't even read the rest. Alex Smith wasn't in on the last drive in the Super Bowl and is a giant "IF" you say so comment that is just your opinion not to be made as an assumption to be fact. WOW what a claim
