I usually hate trading down, but this year may be an exception.

If we traded down, I'd sure love to get a 2nd round back that would let us draft Kevin Minter. The more I read about him the more I like him.

#Lions trading 2013 and 2014 1st Round picks to #Chiefs for No. 1 overall sounds like something made up in Kansas City. Shouldn't happen.

Uh?

So, Ian Rapoport just said on NFLN one of the two trade possibilities he is keeping his eye on is Brandon Albert to the Dolphins.

The questions is? Would the Chiefs be willing to take the Dolphins second pick in the 2nd round #22, 54th overall? The Dolphins first pick in the second round is #10, 42nd overall.

The #10 spot would be 8 picks from where we would have originally picked before the Smith trade.

What say you?

Seems like a good old prison rape, so yes I could see it happening.

Given how much Dorsey/Reid were cheated in the Alex Smith trade, I can see them dealing Albert for #54, drafting an OT 1.1 and setting the stage for the worst offseason moves by any new GM in recent memory.

It establishes a new base line of fail, thereby assuring anything they do in future years will be an improvement. It's kind of like drafting TJ #3. Get your FAIL out of the way when you are new to the job and then you have plenty of room for improvement.

The net effect of this trade is like trading our #1 for the #54 straight up, since Joeckel/Fisher will be just about the same as Albert probably. We'll save $2 M in salary by the move. That's enough to drop 53 spots in the draft isn't it?

Maybe you should look at it like this:

We replaced Cassel, the worst QB in the league last year with Alex Smith who was leading his team to a SB and has been solid the last two year and the BEST QB available.

Then we replaced Albert who was above average with a questionable future back issue that would cost us 9 mil with a more talented Eric Fisher that can anchor the line for the next 10 years and is young.

Then, assuming we trade Albert we pick up a playmaker or QBOTF with the free 2nd we have.

Yeah, that's a good way to look at it.

He could also look at it like this:

We use the 1.1 on the best QB available, Alex Smith. (I understand that some may disagree)

We trade Branden Albert, our 2nd, and a 2014 conditional pick to get younger and cheaper at the position and increase the potential ceiling. In return, we get the Dolphins 2nd (whichever one it is), enough cap space to buy another free agent, and the ability to use the franchise tag on someone else next year.

You've got to be willing to reach for the most important position on the team in order to achieve greatness. Sometimes you've got to take a chance for a change after 30 years. Too risky isn't an excuse.
