LNBS: trying to gauge roster cuts that might be of interest to the Chiefs

I don't work tomorrow and am bored, so I figured a good topic to have a discussion about would be what possible cuts from other teams might be able to help us out to add another piece or two before the season opener.

I had a discussion a month or two ago on how this draft is so deep and talented that I see some BIGTIME talents falling to teams that "just can't pass up the value" and how those types of picks will probably lead to a good amount of teams parting ways with some aging vets that still have gas in the tank, but high cap numbers. Those guys want to play, but some of these rookies are gonna take their jobs.

This is gonna be a thread I'll bump and try to do one team per post breaking down the position groups and how the rookies create logjams on each teams depth charts.

From there, I'll try to look at cap numbers of the vets to try and gauge which players might possibly be cut or traded before the start of the regular season.

Feel free to offer your own breakdowns of individual teams and maybe we can get a called shot somewhere in this thread of a guy were able to add through a trade (possibly player for player trade) or signing after being cut.

I'm gonna start with our own division and think the first team I'll do is San Diego.

Here was there draft class.

1) Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
2) Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB, GT
3) Chris Watt, OG, Notre Dame
5) Ryan Carrethers, NT, Arkansas St
6) Marion Grice, RB, Arizona St
7) Tevin Reese, WR, Baylor

They have 10 corners (inluding Verrett) on their roster and the only guy over 26 is Richard Marshall. I'm not sure i see anything shaking loose there.

They have 8 OLBs on their roster and can see a couple guys I wouldn't mind picking up.

Melvin Ingram
Jeremy Attachuo
Larry English
Jarrett Johnson
Dwight Freeney

I would guess Freeney would be the first guy out, but he just renegotiated his contract with them in march. I'd love to add any of the other guys on that list, if its possible to do so. Highly doubtful they would trade with us, but if they want to cut one of them, I'd expect KC to be active in perusing any of them.

They were thin at guard as is, so I don't see their guards as possible cut we would have interest in. Same goes with NT.

Marion Grice is a very nice receiving back and I was hoping we would take him with one of our seconds.

Donald Brown
Ryan Matthews
Danny Woodhead
Marion Grice

I wouldn't think a pick like Grice would really push any of those guys out and even if it does, the only guy I could see us having interest in would be Woodhead.

WR was a position of need from them and I like the Reese pick. That kid can flat out fly and even though e is small has shown the ability to break a game open.

This is a position I could see us going after scraps

Ajirotutu
Allen
Brown
Floyd
Royal

They also have 7 rookies on their roster...Floyd would cost them over a million to cut so he's out and he is the only vet making good money.

All in all, them moving up to take Attachuo probably means they either cut or trade either

Jarrett Johnson would cost them 1.5 million to cut... Larry English is in the last year of his contract and would save SD 1.5 million to cut...Melvin Ingram would cost them almost 2 million to cut.

So...I'm not sure the draft class of SD is gonna really cause them to move on from anyone that they would save anything with, but I could see them trading Larry English if anybody offered them a ham sandwich for him.

The rest of those guys are all under 3 years in the league, a few of them UDFA, and almost none of them have any real game experience. Jarrett Boykin caught 49 passes last year - his third in the league.

Additionally, the Packers are $15M under the cap right now with no big contracts that need to be redone. All of their top 30 players are locked into TOTALLY AFFORDABLE deals through 2015.

So, in summation, anyone who "shakes loose" from the Packers will do so, less like money shaking loose from your pocket, and more like a crumbly turd shaking loose from your asshole.
This is why I said I would be looking forward to the research.

Now I know.

Nelson, Boykins and Cobb are all going to be FAs though.....so at least one of them is going to get a new deal. Plus I doubt they go into the year with 6 WRs....which means Janis will probably try and be snuck onto the PS.

He'd have to clear waivers, and there are 22 teams in front of us in the process.

We won't be picking up anyone on waivers this year in all likelyhood.

Oh...I'm aware of that. I'm just saying that they're going to have to decide if they want to keep Janis or maybe look at trading away one of the guys who need a new contract. I highly doubt they re-sign all three of them.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Nelson, Cobb and Boykin are all FAs after this year.
If we could get Nelson or Cobb, why, that would just be delightful.
