KU's Miles new Big 12 assists leader

Quote:
Miles breaks mark

Kansas senior Aaron Miles became the Big 12 career assist leader with 9 assists against Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He set the record in the first half, and eventually boosted his career total to 800, four short of the KU record held by Jacque Vaughn.

"It's a good accomplishment," said the 6-1 point guard. "I've got to pay credit to my teammates for making the shots and making me look good. My biggest concern, though, is I had five turnovers."

Although the Big 12 record, which was previously held by Oklahoma State's Doug Gottleib (793), is noteworthy, the conference is only in its ninth year of existence. A more worthy achievement will be to pass Vaughn, who played for the Jayhawks from 1994-97.

"It's a big deal," KU coach Bill Self said of the Big 12 mark, "but breaking Jacque's record will mean more to Aaron. He needs what? Four more to break it? He better get that early in the first half on the first (of January against No. 9 Georgia Tech)."

The thing I really like about Miles is that he's more concerned about minimizing turnovers than breaking an assists record. That is the reason why he's got such a great assist to turnover ratio. He's a great leader, too.

Miles is a four year starter. We will really miss him next year.

Has anyone else noticed that Miles has been playing much tougher on defense this year? Seems to me that he has always been thought of as more of an offensive player in the past. Maybe not a big scorer but, he could get you some points when your team needed it. But he's always been able to distribute the ball and break down defenses with dribble penetration. This year, his defense seems to be improved, IMO. He's getting steals and hounding the opponents PG.

Yes, but Russell Robinson is filling in nicely. Albeit he does turn the ball over a little too much. I'm guessing that will improve. But the kid can hound an opponent and gets a lot of steals. I think KU will be in good hands with him at the point.

The entire team is tougher on defense this year, IMO.

Yea we play the Kentucky Wildcats in a few weeks and my sisters boyfriend thinks Patrick Sparks is better than Miles and I know Sparks cause my high school team played against him while I was managing and me and him are pretty good friends.

See I know Patrick real well in all but he is not as good as Aaron Miles, I mean I love watching him play cause he's one of my friends but I think when him and Miles meet that Miles is gonna shut him down completely.

Robinson won't start at Point next year unless the #1 high school point guard goes pro (at least last I checked Chalmers was rated #1).

Mario Chalmers is supposed to be the next great KU point guard.

Freshman point guards make me nervous. It turned out OK with Miles though so I'm sure it will work out. Chalmers is still heading our way the last I heard. I hope the guy can shoot 3's. We haven't had one that could since before Vaughn.

From what i've seen of Miles he is a better leader than Sparks, assists, defense, other teammates before him, better free throw shooter, and can take it to the hoop and be successful at it.

Sparks can gets assist, good at 3's, lousy on defense, put himself alot before his other players, and is not as good a free throw shooter and slower than Miles.

Miles' shooting is nothing to write home about. Free throws or otherwise. Simien is the best free thrower on the team at 88%.

From what I've read Chalmers is a point guard in more of the Allen Iverson mold. He's been head and shoulders above his recruiting class in terms of scoring at all of the various all star games he's attended.
