Anyone see/will see the new Pirates movie tonight?

I was looking foward to seeing it, but can't tonight and wondered if someone could give me a review. I saw the last Pirates of Carribbean movie and thought it was badass. Appreciate it.

thanks,

My take:

It's one big, loooong (2:25) glorifed trailer for the third movie.
Pirates 1 = awesome.
Pirates 2 = not as funny, not as exciting. It makes little sense without the first movie, but has absolutely no resolution without the third.

Put it this way: Most people were upset at The Matrix Reloaded for being a overwrought cliffhanger of a movie. This is a little bit worse than that in terms of dissapointment.

I hope your take on this is not quite spot on! I'm going to go see it tonight. Making it a cliffhanger to pique the appetite for a third movie doesn't bother me, if it's done right. The LOTR films did it right, the Matrix films didn't. I'll let you know tomorrow if I agree with your take or not.

Okay, here's my review:

**** WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD ****

I don't think they did the cliff-hanger too badly. It whets the appetite for part 3, but it doesn't leave a bunch of unanswered questions (i.e. we know what happened to Jack, we know what happened to the contents of the chest, and we know which delightful scoundrel is going to help them save the day in part 3 - everyone in the audience cheered and applauded when they saw who it was walking down the stairs in that final scene).

Humor: The humor was done a bit differently than in the first one. In many ways it was just as funny, but the humor was spread out a lot more. In the first one, about 70% of the comedy was provided by Johnny Depp and his ad-lib quipping, 20% by Captain Barbossa, and the rest by small quips here and there from the other pirates, and from action comedy. Jack still has the lion's share of comedy in this one, but the other characters, especially Norrington and Elizebeth, step up and get a bigger share than previously. Will (Orlando Bloom) is still pretty straightforward, though. And there is a lot more slapstick action comedy than in the first one, especially in the cannibal island scene.

Romance: The romance between Will and Elizabeth is put on hold, and a monkey wrench is thrown in when Will witnesses Elizabeth and Jack toward the end. However, I think he mistook what he saw. I don't think Elizabeth was deeply interested in Jack. I think it was a combination of two things -- 1) answering Jack's challenge to taste what the other side is like, and 2) it was a goodbye kiss, because she knew she was consigning Jack to death. I'm sure part 3 will resolve that question.

Action: There is a lot of decent action in this one, probably a little bit more than in the first one. I saw a thing on the Disney Channel about the choreography of the 3-way fight scene between Norrington, Will and Jack on the water wheel. They actually did do that, the wheel wasn't just added in with cgi later (though much of the background was), and it wasn't stunt people, it was the real actors, according to that interview, so that impressed me a lot. I'm torn on the action with the kracken. On the one hand, it was extremely chaotic, and that's how it actually would be if such a creature existed and attacked in that manner. On the other hand, when it was attacking the Black Pearl, I kept thinking, damn, when is this going to end and how can there still be anything left of that ship?

The compass: At first I thought the whole compass thing was a little silly, until I realized what it was actually about. It's actually sort of a metaphor, it's part of what gives Jack a sense of moral direction. It's his "moral compass," so to speak.

All in all, I give this one two thumbs up. I don't know if I like it better than the first one, or just equal, but it is definitely worth the ticket price, and I can't wait for the third one!

The problem with that is, everytime the other used the compass it pointed to the other person... They left that opened ended as the treasure was always by the person or the other love... Thats my take anyways...

The kraken was confusing, one minute is could eat a ship whole, the next it was being passive.. Then came up and took the ship down with it..I know they needed to draw out the battle more, just wish they would have had the kraken on top of the water more like in the end..

The compass: At first I thought the whole compass thing was a little silly, until I realized what it was actually about. It's actually sort of a metaphor, it's part of what gives Jack a sense of moral direction. It's his "moral compass," so to speak.

The compass just shows the item you want the most, At first Eliz wanted Will, then it started showing Jack.. This is why the compass tracked down the first treasure, and the key to the chest and started going all funky when Eliz was imprisoned and Jack did not know what he wanted after he got the key... This is where Jacks moral side kicked in and confused the compass as to what Jack really wanted...

All in all, I give this one two thumbs up. I don't know if I like it better than the first one, or just equal, but it is definitely worth the ticket price, and I can't wait for the third one!

Its a average action flick, and defiantly a must see to all fans of the first movie and those wanted to finish watching the trilogy... But the movie just lacked a solid plot and storyline of the first one.. The acting was fine, the Cgi was fine and the sets were great.. Just the storyline and plot killed the movie, and all the filler time, this movie should have been an hour and half to maybe two hours long, not two and half... How exactly is Barbosa alive??? Me thinks voodoo magic since you see his boots at the first visit laying on the table, but why him?? They could have used Jacks dad as the new captian...

The guy that did the sets and costumes for the Flying Dutchmen though did a fantastic job, of course this could be because that story was one of my favorites as a kid...

I'm pretty sure that's what they meant to imply. Tia had implied that with the aid of magic, Jack could be brought back to life and the Black Pearl raised again.

I assume you meant Will's dad, not Jack's dad, n'est pas? They couldn't use Will's dad at this point, because he's still in service to Davey Jones. They have to first recover the heart from Norrington before they can free Bootstrap Bill. That's something else that confused me! Why were Jack and Will fighting over the heart? They could both have easily just worked together to get what they wanted - first let Jack use it to lift his curse, then let Will use it to kill Davey Jones and free his dad. I can see, though, why Norrington was fighting for it, since he needed it intact to deliver to the governor (which it wouldn't be, once Will was done with it).

Yeah, I totally dug the characters on that ship, with their human/sea creature permutations. And the ship itself was pretty awesome!

Nope, the third movie has Jack's dad as a main character... Rocker Keith Richards, this is who should have replaced Barbossa at the end of dead mans chest...

I believe their will be a coherant plot in the next movie and back on par with the storytelling of the first one...

Ah, I didn't know that. I read through the plot summary of the third movie at imdb.com, but I didn't look that closely at the cast list, so I didn't know Jack's father was going to come into play.

From what I understand from the imdb summary, the East India Trading Company will become a major "bad guy," being represented by Lord Beckett and "Admiral" Norrington, who are trying to eliminate all piracy from the high seas. It's supposed to be a huge showdown between the EITC, Jack/Will/Elizabeth & Crew, and Davy Jones & Crew. IMDB also alluded to heroes on both sides, so I'm kind of curious to see if Norrington will switch sides again and rejoin Sparrow & Co., or maybe Governor Swan will do something heroic. I just hate having to wait a whole year to find out!

It's about their glory years. I hear the next film is supposed to star Kent Tekulve and Eddie Murray.
