Work at home?

I know that the question has been asked before, but does anyone here know of a legit (and legal) work at home business? My wife is considering leaving her job to stay at home with the kids for a year until our oldest goes to kindergarten. She is looking for something she can do in the evening once I get home from work to make ends meet. Prostitution is not an option, hence my "legal" comment.

Anyone?

My cousin's wife enters medical records at home, and seems to like doing it. I have no idea what it pays (not a lot, I'm guessing), but she has some sort of weekly quota, and she can do it any time as long as she meets the quota.

You could always set up a webcam and take requests. That would be a win-win all around...

Well the obvious...
Babysit other kids.
No easier way to make money. She could even go REALLY legit and make a great living off of watching kids if she opens up her own daycare.

Trying to talk my wife into quitting her job to babysit for 2 years and then we'd expand to a daycare building and all she'd have to do is manage it. 6 figure salary if it's done right.

Luckily I work from home and watch my youngest 2. Saves me atleast $1000/month. Get the point?

She can be a copywriter, desktop publisher or a graphic designer.
But they require training with probably the least being for a desktop publisher.

A six-figure salary in day care? Just a note: the digits behind the decimal point don't count when you're adding up the figures.

I beg to differ.

avg cost for infants is $175/week
toddler $130ish
pre kindergarten $130ish.

I have a cousin that pays $250/week for 1 kid.

Now Let's do some math.
There's 52 weeks in a year which means she'd need to make $Approx $2k / week. That's 12-15 kids /week. Easily a daycare has anywhere up to 50 kids @ any Lepetite or whatever.

$100k isn't uncommon in the industry.

Note: That's gross.... It's also attainable to Net 6 figures also.
Le Petite does.

Yeah, but aren't there all sorts of requirements about the maximum kids per employee, and requirements to have equipment to get all of the kids out of a burning building in two minutes, and a bunch of other stuff?

Good luck to you if you've done the feasibility study, but my impression of that industry was that it's pretty low-margin.

Sure there's requirements... I think it's like 4-6 kids per person.
But the person only makes like $7/hr. Mostly teens on summer break or people that love kids. Ceilings have to be like 8'.

Could be low margin... someone always needs daycare. Once you have your building and it passes requirements Everything else is good. Just like any business, There's probably startup pains. But it's probably one of the safest businesses out there.

Someone always need daycare.

Maybe I shouold note that's it's a business that you genuinely have to be interested in. You have to love kids or it will not work unless you hire a GM that takes care of it.

Only place I know that charged by the hour is individuals on college campuses.

Everyone else is mostly weekly flat fee from 6am or 7am - 6pm.

Luckily my aunt watched our infants we called around and the cheapest we found was $175/week.

I think your math is wrong. I'd be willing to bet that it's very uncommon in the industry. Maybe if you have a large daycare that successfully caters to a high end clientele with a very cheap staff, but otherwise I don't see it. Good luck though, I hope I'm wrong.
