There will never be a single "best bassist".There will never be a single "best band". We can all agree that music as a whole, like any art,is subjective. Knowing that,I present my top 3 bassists: 3:Cliff Burton(Metallica lost it's heart when he died) 2.Kim Deal(ummm...download "Into the White" by the Pixies) 1.Claypool (he reinvented what a bass guitar could do and meant) Of course these are only recent R&R selections. If it was taken further, Jazz,Funk, and BeBop old-schoolers need to be considered as well. Bootsie Collins says":Let your funk flag wave high!"

Sorry, Victor Wooten is hands-down the best. When I lived in Nashville, we'd always go down to 3rd and Lindsley on Wednesday nights to watch the Wooten brothers play. It was unreal.
No one compares. |

When I opened this thread I thought to myself, if its not Les this thread is worthless.
To think he tried out for Metallica, after Burton died, and they turned him away saying "you are to good for our band" http://youtube.com/watch?v=vlip3Lm_I...elated&search=

He's awesome... and he was taught the craft by this man... Stanley Clarke Another guy to include in here, although his style isn't my favorite is Jaco Pastorius. Unfortunately embedding this clip isn't allowed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdY-KAmj5fU

as well as La/Hollywood (not that I care about Hollywood.) Lastly, I hate to use this word because often it is used. But he never sold-out to commercial-> when he very easily could've. All of the above is what makes him the best/most appealing bass player. JMO |

Victor Wooten with Stanley Clarke (and Marcus Miller thrown in to boot - talk about a bass fest!!!)
edit... what's even more amazing to me about this, is that you have arguably 3 of the top 5 or so living bassists together sharing the stage. Wooten taking the high end, Miller on the low, and Clarke in the middle.

I was just looking at Claypool's Bio. I can;t believe it has been 14 years since Primus headlined Lollapalooza. Damn I feel old. Also sad that was the last decent Lollapalooza lineup.

My favorite bassist is Jason Douglas with Vedera.
That's some excellent music, I tell ya what. |

No one has brought the name Michael Balzary to this discussion.

In all fairness, I think he should be on the list, but he's not THE best. I still like The Ox better. He's No. 1 in my book. Put Tony Levin on the list, too. I also like Noel Redding. |
