Other Sports The "Happy Gilmore" Golf Swing

Video on sports science. Padraig Harrington the guest pro on the show.

Anyone who's seen Happy Gilmore and plays golf has at least tried this swing off the tee box, or at the driving range. Has anyone here actually gotten a good solid, straight hit down the middle of the fairway, and if so, was it considerably farther than your normal driving distance off the tee?

Here's the video, it's hard (IMO) to get a good shot off this way. Personally I've done it just once at a driving range and absolutely skull ****ed the ball all the way to Mars. Tried it many times since and can't get a good hit.

I tried it last year, and whiffed 19 out 20 times. The one time I made contact, well let's just say I am not allowed at that range anymore.

I have enough trouble keeping the ball in the fairway when I'm standing still.

Pretty amazing how Harrington has the same backswing even with a running start.

I would kill for that backswing.

In an issue of Golf Digest about 13 years ago, someone suggest it as an anti-slice drill due to the nature of the inside downswing.

I spray it pretty good with the Happy but the 3 or 4x I've actually made square contact I've really smoked it. I drive the ball a long, long ways anyway but a well-struck Happy is something to behold.

I had that shot down before the movie came out... about 89-90 I was doing that jacking around at Long Run CG in Lou, KY...

It's sweet when you hit it right, not so sweet when you shank it onto the adjacent green...

Yeah I have a about a 10% accuracy.. Which is not much less then my normal hard swing standing still.. Only reason why I am on golf teams, beer and to get us down the green in bunches..

I've done it once with success. Only tried it once though. Well maybe twice.... To me the key was knowing where to plant your left foot as you started the through swing.

I was playing pretty well around that time so it wasn't so hard.

I always wondered why Happy just didn't borrow the money from the bank to pay all the back taxes on his grandmother's house. He was a pro golfer one would think he could get that loan.
