#bringbackourgirls

So I'm kind of fascinated by a cultural discussion that is happening around this whole "#bringbackourgirls" thing.

On one side, you've got Rush Limbaugh, sounding a little callous:
I just think this is pathetic. I'm just stunned. We got 300 Nigerian girls kidnapped by an Al-Qaeda group, and nobody cared or talked about it for a while. Hillary wouldn't call 'em a terror group. Now, all of a sudden, for some reason, we're on a big push to get 'em back and this is how...? Well, you can't read the writing. It's a plea for people on Twitter to get in gear and bring the girls back. It's #BringBackOurGirls. Apparently there's a Twitter... What do you call 'em, handle? It's the number sign
"BringBackOurGirls." (interruption) It's a hashtag, okay.

Anyway, there's Mrs. Obama looking sad and grim, and the sad thing here is that the low-information crowd that's puddling around out there on Twitter is gonna think we're actually doing something about it. (interruption) Exactly. Yeah, they'll say, "At least she is trying, Mr. Limbaugh. What are you doing? At least Mrs. Obama cares! At least they're trying to get them back."

Here it is again, closer. See it? Is that not pathetic? What the hell message does that send? Imagine if bin Laden were still alive. Imagine Ayman al-Zawahiri. Can you imagine? They're laughing at this over in the huts and so forth wherever they are. It is just unbelievable. #BringBackOurGirls. They're Nigerian, unless there's something that we don't know.

But are we really this powerless? The correct way to look at this is the audience that will see it -- the Twitter, low-information universe -- will say, "Oh, Mrs. Obama! At least they care, and at least they're trying to do something."
On the other side, I guess you've got Michelle Obama, who is doing the radio address this week to "demand justice for Boko Haram kidnap victims."

The question that I have about all this is "to what end?" I don't particularly like Rush Limbaugh. He's tone deaf at the very least. But isn't it also tone deaf to hold up a sign for twitter without any real call to action? This reminds me a lot of the #occupywallstreet stuff, where they call a bunch of people to "raise awareness" - but that's the extent of the call to action.

I don't understand what this is supposed to accomplish. As a father, I feel terrible about these girls, but I would be disgusted if the extent of the people with the power to do anything about it basically turned that loss into a branding campaign for how in touch and compassionate they are.

I mean it's hilarious.

Do you actually think anyone in Washington, let alone The First Lady, actually cares about ANYONE in Nigeria?

Hell no.

Rush Limbough is the definition of old, bitter white man.

Why exactly is this an issue? It's a pop culture thing. He's mad because people who don't spend every waking moment talking politics are just now becoming aware of the issue? Is he mad because people are spreading the message even though they aren't as informed as others might be?

"I knew about Nigeria before everyone started tweeting about it. I'm so smart".

Hipster attitudes in politics. JFC we're all doomed.

People who listen to Limbough are people who bitch and complain and are mad about everything all day.

"Goddamn those kids taking to twitter! Great and now the Obamas are taking advantage of it too!"

Even Al-Qaeda probably thinks this is crossing the line... I would fully support us throwing in several SF teams to lead a multinational group of SF teams to go in there and just wax these guys asses.

Chuck Norris, The Expendables, whoever... just get them all together and go handle these savages.

Boko Haram, worst music group of all time.

I vote that we invade without a clear objective, decide later to rebuild all of Nigeria and piss off every single resident thus creating a much larger/long term issue.

I kid.

A multinational special forces mission works for me. Scumbags need to know that they'll get ****ed up when they pull these kind of stunts.

Just like the "Janjaweed" in Sudan, a few hundred SF guys and a smattering of airpower would be all it takes to completely wipe them out... half of these guys are wearing sandals and toting rusty ass old Kalashnikovs.

It would basically be a glorified training mission for well equipped and trained men... why its so hard for the world to put little missions like this together I'll never know.

What is sad is how shallow the Obamas and their ilk are. They really believe a tweet is substantial. And a tweet that is part of a selfie is like reallllllly hot

****ing nitwits.

Cosmo and his gang will be along shortly to say "oh yeah, how dare she draw attention to this awful situation".

But the truth is America, as usual, needs to be the one to get the ball rolling and put together the coalition that goes over there and handles this... stupid tweets aren't going to do JACK, you're husband holds all the cards Michelle, if he wants the girls back he can make it happen by pressuring our pussy allies and throwing in some US arms/leadership. Just like Sudan where ragtag muslims were terrorizing southern Christians.

No matter if she did something or nothing, there would be whining about it. Occupy Wall Street was a lot more abstract and I don't think a good comparison. I don't know what Michelle's options here are other than to raise awareness, but what's wrong with that?

Not torn at all, yes, she's awful for trying to get something done with ****ing twitter... if its so important to her, the man she goes to bed with every night has the answer.

If Barack Hussein Obama, President of the US, cant get some damn action and consensus going in Africa, who the hell can?... who exactly is she appealing to here? The only person who can help her big cause is out back in the Rose Garden having a smoke.
