He’s built very similarly Kareem Hunt. Like a shorter, faster version. He has massive thighs which is what helps him carry defenders and keep his balance.

More I learn about him the more I like him.

I'd be great if he would show enough to be able to move into the lead back role after this upcoming season or even at the tail end of this season.

I always though Hunt was bigger, but he’s listed at 216lbs. So, yeah, this Darwin guy isn’t that far off. I’m probably most excited to see this guy play out of anyone we drafted. Hardman should be fun too, but I can see Darwin getting more play since it’s a less-complicated position.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but apparently Chiefs tried to trade up for him.

I wonder how much Eric Bienemy has to do with scouting these guys.

He’s clearly a common denominator, since he’s been with the chiefs just as long as Andy Reid has

Darwin said he can see himself in EB and McCullough. He wants to become a coach after he’s done with the NFL.

I hope EB doesn’t go anywhere after this season but it’s inevitable that he will

Slightly off topic but I feel the same about Greg Lewis & Tyreek Hill. We praise how Tyreek Hill has become the most dangerous weapon in the NFL but it is a night and day difference with how Tyreek has progressed with his ability to play the receiver position from when he was drafted.

With the Mecole Hardman pick, it is eerily similar how the Chiefs are attempting to turn a raw athlete into a complete WR. The Chiefs right now covet athleticism as opposed to a receiver who is more polished.

I think they know what they need as far as intelligent enough to learn the playbook and athletic enough to do what’s needed of him.

Yeah but you're understating the ability to turn a phenomenal athlete into a complete receiver. John Ross, Perriman, Heyward-Bey etc. there are about a million names of receivers who were "athletic enough" to do what's needed of them. What I am praising Greg Lewis, Andy Reid and co specifically on is the job they've done with Tyreek Hill into turning him into the most dangerous player in football in a long time.

Greg Lewis in a brief interview touches on it here:

https://twitter.com/chiefs/status/947164383943077888

Athletic enough to do what is needed + learning the playbook does not = results in the NFL. I think as a fan base we don't give enough credit to the Chiefs coaching staff on turning a lot of players into some of the best at their position in the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes
Tyreek Hill
Kareem Hunt ...
Chris Jones

A lot of these guys have blossomed into the top tier at their respective positions. You got to give credit to the individual themselves but I also put a lot of merit into the environment and who they are learning from as well. That's also why with the Chiefs drafting I usually give them a little more rope on their selections. We've been one of the better franchises with the NFL draft (lately at least) and honestly I trust their decision making.

Anyways though I don't want to get too sidetracked on this discussion. I love this pick by the Chiefs- a lot of advanced stats say that this kid is exceptional in breaking tackles. In today's NFL you live and die with matchups and one missed tackle usually leads to a big gain.

Great episode - Matt Waldman (who apparently has some super intense 1400 page draft guide) is really high on this kid.

Already making people miss and on day 1 lmao. Look @ 0:40

Also Kissel mentioned yesterday Thompson stood out day one:
Quote:
Utah State’s Darwin Thompson—the Chiefs’ fifth-round pick—displayed the ability that people have come to know about the 5-foot-8, 198-pound playmaker in the passing game. Another running back—Marcus Marshall out of James Madison, who is attending on a tryout basis—showed some ability in the passing game as well.

There was one play in particular that Thompson had the ball in his hands and was running out in space down the field and did a perfectly-executed jump-cut to explode back to the right and into the clear for a huge gain. It showed the athleticism that people have been wanting to see.
