why Hasn't Leo Chenal Gotten A New Contract?

What is going on here?

I have a feeling that Leo Chenal might actually be a better MIKE backer than Bolton. But he simply hasn't had the opportunity to showcase it because he gets limited snaps. He's not the greatest in coverage, but neither is Bolton. The team hasn't had a top shelf coverage backer since Willie Gay.

Go ahead and rewatch the 2023 Super Bowl against the 49ers. Chenal was the best player in the game. Dude is animal and he melts blocks.

He needs to be resigned. Otherwise, he might leave and become an All Pro for somebody else like Zack Baun.

I was watching the Locked on Chiefs podcast and the subject of is Leo Chenal actually a better Linebacker than Nick Bolton came up. And there was an uncomfortable pause before the inevitability of the answer sunk in. Yea, he is. And if he leaves and becomes a top shelf MIKE backer in the NFL that is going to be a really hard pill to swallow.

If he's that much better than Bolton then why did Chenal have 41% percent of defensive snaps compared with Bolton's 87% in 2024?

I'm a Chenal fan but saying he's better than Bolton is a load of nonsense. The same Nick Bolton who was arguably our best player in Super Bowl 57.

That's a great question. PFF has the same question.

He won't get one, IMO.

They drafted the freak LB to replace him. Bassa or something.

Love Leo Chenal and would be glad to see him here on a second contract, but if they had to make a choice between him and Bolton I think Bolton's role as QB of the defense would be the deciding factor. By all accounts, the system Spags runs is greatly helped by having an on-the-field coach making sure everybody else knows assignments and is in position.

I hate the fact that you didn’t capitalize “why”, but you did for every other word.

Do better!

unless you are Patrick Mahomes, draft picks typically play out their entire contracts here.

If we lose him we lose him. This regime does an amazing job of finding and developing replacements.

They are not remotely the same LB if Bassa replaces starter it's Tranquil.

Chenal is strong as an ox,can take on OL in the run game and be like a 5th DL at times and be decent in coverage.

Bassa is a 231lb converted safety.

Agreed.

Also, I feel like SLB is probably the easiest spot to fill in the unit so as much as I like Chenal, it's not the end of the world.

As for the OP... any statement that has "top shelf coverage linebacker" and "Willie Gay" put together is absolute garbage.
