If you are in a situation where the 1 second matters (you must be thinking of a street mugging or something, where you are jumped with no warning I guess. I was thinking of other scenarios), then you are probably better off not going for the gun at all.

The fact remains, the odds of an accidental discharge is a hell of a lot higher than the odds that the second matters, especially given the extremely high probability that you'll never be attacked or threatened in any way for as long as you live.
