It's part of his plea deal that he got three to 10 years and eligible for parole at 3 years. The prosecution didn't think they could get a conviction for some odd reason and they were worried that his blood draw showing his BAC would get thrown out.

Now how a guy hits somebody and kills them and their blood draw is in Jeopardy of getting thrown out of court is beyond comprehension to me. Supposedly that's the story though.

Um, really? He deserved to go to prison but it's not like it was premeditated. He never wanted that to happen.

I'm more concerned about violent repeat offending rapists or murderers going free. I feel like there is little chance dude ever speeds again

That said, don't you dare even think about bringing this guy to the Chiefs

When you drive drunk (under the influence) it is premeditated.

I'm sure you've never done it in your life.

Half this board premeditated murder if they ever drove on more than one drink.

If they killed someone...yeah. If they didn't...then the didn't.

Look...you drink, you drive, you kill someone...it might not be targeting a specific person, but you sure as hell did it. That's why it's manslaughter and not murder 1. That was also a plea dead. If that had gone in front of a jury, his sentence would have been much longer.

Every repeat drunk driver or speeder ever would probably have something to say about that, but I don't have the one right answer for it either... wouldn't be sad if someone who was so reckless rotted in jail (and no I've never driven 125mph through a suburb while drunk before), and then on one hand no amount of jail time "fixes" many people, yet to a large extent the point is to protect them from the public, too, if they pose a threat in the future (and what's the value of "probably won't do that again, against the real risk of him doing it again)...

Recidivism rates for DUI offenders are EXPONENTIALLY higher than recidivism rates for most violent offenders.

About 2% of murderers are arrested for a later murder. About 25% of DUI offenders are arrested for another DUI.

Odds are pretty good that this ****head will get behind the wheel hammered again. Now simple probability says he probably won't kill someone else doing it, but the world is a safer place with him behind bars.

All true and any time someone argues that drunk driving should be taken seriously I not only don't know how to argue that but also I don't want to be the ONE who tries.

I guess I'm saying if he gets out of prison that isn't why the system is broken there are way more egregious examples

Nah. Nobody is driving 125mph through a neighborhood on two drinks... and even if you do drive at say. 08 or .1 and get in an accident, chances are you won't kill someone unless you're at a high rate of speed and hit someone who isn't... such as doing the stupid shit he was doing.

Not condoning drinking and driving at all, but putting such a broad stroke on it like everyone has made as dumb of a decision as Riggs is kind of dumb.

A complete guess, but say someone blew a .1 and ran a stoplight, got a DUI... I'd imagine it's more likely they'd think holy ****, I only had a few drinks and that could have been much worse..... than say someone who just has zero regard for anyone, like Riggs' actions indicate.

I suppose it's really not at all the same thing white knuckling a drive home 2mph under the speed limit terrified you might get pulled over for having five drinks and like...
