Live After Death by Maiden immediately comes to mind. As always I'm gonna pimp Queens of the Stone Age via this year's "Over the Years and through the Woods". Kiss Alive is probably one of the more known live records. I believe Frampton Comes Alive is the biggest selling live record ever. Johnny Cash's Live at Folsom Prison is also a classic. I've considered picking up "Past Lives" by Sabbath but haven't done it yet.

Bob Seger's Live Bullet is awesome.

Nightwish

Maiden's "Live After Death" is really good, though I think "Rock in Rio" is better. Rush's "A Show of Hands" is quite good, and I expect "Rush in Rio" is as good as Maiden's similarly titled album, but I haven't heard it. The main reason I haven't gone out to buy it yet is that I saw them on the same tour, so I got the experience much better than a DVD will ever bring.

A couple classic live albums:

Styx "Caught in the Act"
Cheap Trick "Live at Budokan"

And, considering my username, I would be remiss not to mention Nightwish's "From Wishes to Eternity."

I forgot one of my favorites and the new domestic Capitol remastered CD contains everything from the record, which the import didn't even do.

Grand Funk "Caught in the Act" Footstompin' Music, Rock 'N Roll Soul, I'm your Captain/Closer to Home, Heartbreaker, Some Kind of Wonderful, Shinin' On, The Loco Motion, Black Licorice, The Railroad, We're an American Band, T.N.U.C., Inside Looking Out, Gimme Shelter.

I have a Pearl Jam show from 95, Live at Soldier Field, that's probably my favorite.
That CD pisses me off. Our local music store 'Vintage Vinyl' had a contest where they were giving away 100 copies [50 CD, 50 vinyl] of that concert specially pressed just for them by Pearl Jam [this was like a month or two after the concert]. I entered oodles of times and ended up winning twice.
Wow!! A limited edition collector's item!! My fandom has been rewarded!!
Then, a couple years later, it's all over Best Buy and Circuit City for like $4.99.

It sounds like we have similiar tastes. Since you haven't heard the others, the one you might want to take a chance on is Uriah Heep "Live January 1973". I quit buying live albums myself and now only buy live concert DVD's, I've managed to collect about 150 in the past two years. The Uriah Heep is the only one you won't be able to find anything on concert video from that era.

I saw the Allman Bros in 1969 in a club in Florida, I also saw Deep Purple and Jethro Tull in 1972 and Uriah Heep in 1974, all were outstanding. Uriah Heep released ten albums between 1970 - 1976 with singer David Byron, he's like Ian Gillan of Deep Purple but more of a showman and even greater range at times. Byron left the band in 1976 and Gary Thain their original bass player died in 1975, and Ken Hensley who wrote most of the early songs and played the Hammond keyboard left in 1980, so the 1974 show is with all the originals. It has an all black cover with a white letters just spelling out the title, if you can get the UK import it has the encore of the Rock'n'Roll Medley, which the U.S. version does not contain. They are sort of like Deep Purple with the Hammond sound, but less guitar, more vocals and great high-range harmony background vocals that give them a mystical sound. Their most famous albums are "Demons & Wizards" from 1973 and "Sweet Freedom" from 1974. They are still around touring with the original guitarist and drummer the only ones left, David Byron died in 1985 from sirosis of the liver.

These are my top 3.

1. Cheap Trick - Live at Budokan. I went thru 3 double LP's because I played them so much. I now own the double CD GOLD complete concert uncut.

2. Rush - Exit stage left. What can I say you either love Rush or you can't stand them. Seen them 4 times in concert.

3. Peter Frampton - Frampton comes alive.

I tend to not like live albums. I would much rather see the band. However, my two favorites are:

Siouxie and the Banshees' Nocturne

Emmylou Harris' Spyboy (the video of the show is excellent)

EDIT:

I have to add:

Thin White Rope's The One That Got Away (http://www.mp3.com/albums/60491/summary.html)

I prefer their studio stuff but this has a nice mix of songs from all of their albums and has decent production.
