This is ole Dino Hackett!!! I do believe he was a pro bowl alternate one year, so he was a pretty good LB for a few years until Marty and his defensive system took over. Undersized but quick as all get go, a poor man's Jack Lambert perhaps but Dino did not have the Steel Curtain in front of him. Maybe the Lambert reference is a stretch, but these were the lean years of the Chiefs, remember, so one had to hang their hat somewhere.

Dino Hackett had one of the best names of any linebacker ever. He was an effective middle linebacker for a few years, but not a star. Frankly, I thought he was a bit overrated.

Rain Man

I say "middle linebacker" because I think he played in a 4-3, but it's possible that he was an inside linebacker in a 3-4. I think he was an MLB, though.

Like I said, he may have been overrated, but who do you pull for back then, Tim Cofield? Of course Billy Bob Maas and Deron Cherry and that rest of that great secondary played with Hackett, but besides that, the pickings were awfully slim back then. We are spoiled nowadays.

The Back of the Card Reads-

" In 1987 Dino Was Chiefs' Leading tackler for the second consecutive season collectiong 103 total tackles to follow his brilliant 140- tackle rookie campain. His statistical line showed four double digit tackle outings and the frist 2 QB sacks of his Career Last Season. Dino Led the Chiefs in Tackles 5 Games and also recorded 2 forced fumbles during the year."

No, he broke up a fight between Otis Taylor and Jack Del Rio, the current head coach of Jax Jaguars. Del Rio thought Taylor was crossing the line during the strike or siding with managment or something, so the fracas started. Hell Cactus Jack, Otis had to eat too!!

Del Rio and Hackett were among the strikers who were riding around Arrowhead in the back of a pickup armed with shotguns during the strike. Del Rio was let go post haste. I hate both of them. Especially Del Rio for attacking Otis Taylor. Taylor is a legend, Del Rio is a dog turd.

He played his whole career in a 3-4.

He played left inside LB in 1986 (his rookie year -2nd round draft pick out of Appalacian State). For the next 5 years he played right inside LB, and was named to the Pro-Bowl and second team All Pro in 1988. He finished his career in 1992 in Seattle.

The starting LB lineups for the 6 years he was a starter were as follows going from left to right:

Cooper Hackett Radecic Cofield
Cooper Pearson Hackett Del Rio
Del Rio Pearson Hackett Cofield
Martin Ashley Hackett Thomas
Martin Snow Hackett Thomas
Martin Simean Hackett Thomas

1987
One of the most tumultuous weeks in franchise history took place following the club’s playoff loss vs. the Jets. Assistant head coach and special teams coach Frank Gansz, who had been an integral figure in the club’s remarkable ‘86 campaign, resigned his position on January 7th in order to pursue opportunities as an NFL offensive coordinator. It was announced in an impromptu press conference that Mackovic was relieved of his duties on January 8th. A popular figure among Chiefs players, Gansz was reinstated on January 10th and was named the sixth head coach in franchise history.

QB Len Dawson became the third Chiefs player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 8th, while injuries forced the retirement of the club’s all-time leading tackler LB Gary Spani. A duo of rookies made a splash in a 20-13 win on Opening Day vs. San Diego (9/13) as RB Paul Palmer returned a kickoff for a TD and RB Christian Okoye dashed for 105 yards. A 24-day NFLPA strike began on September 22nd. The club’s contest vs. Minnesota (9/27) was cancelled before replacement games were conducted the next three weeks. Much like Marv Levy five years earlier, Gansz’s grip on the club’s coaching reigns was crippled by the labor unrest.

Kansas City’s replacement squad consisted primarily of players cut in training camp. One of the few bright spots among this motley crew was RB Jitter Fields, who remained on the active roster following the strike. The Chiefs strike squad received an ominous welcome in Los Angeles when in the early morning hours prior to a contest vs. the Raiders (10/4), an earthquake rattled Southern California. The visibly shaken Chiefs lost a 35-17 decision later that day. The low point of the year came the following week at Miami (10/11) in the first regular season game played at what then was known as Joe Robbie Stadium. Chiefs QB Matt Stevens was injured early in the contest, forcing into duty QB Alex Espinoza, a player who had never taken an NFL snap. The result was a 42-0 Dolphins victory, setting the stage for an 0-3 performance by Kansas City’s replacement unit, giving the Chiefs a 1-4 record before the club’s regular roster returned at San Diego (10/25). Five straight losses followed, giving the Chiefs a team-record nine-game losing skid. For the only time in team history, five different players started games at quarterback for the club. Behind Kenney, Kansas City won two of its last three games to conclude the strike-shortened 4-11 campaign.

Our defense back then was feast or famine. We had very, very good players like Art Still and Deron Cherry and Gary Barbaro and Albert Lewis and Gary Green and Bill Maas and Kevin Ross, but then we always had glaring weaknesses at (particularly) linebacker and usually 1 or 2 of the DL spots.

Our offense, however, was a famine of epic proportions. It was Ethiopia famine if there were no goats. It was North Korea famine with no rice. It was lunar famine.

I am not exactly a fawn ...

Eh, skip's a great guy. He just n00b hunts for sport. The best thing you can do around here is to fire back randomly and without facts. Just pick a random fact and start berating skip with it.

Here, I'll show you.

Hey, skip. I heard that you marched at Selma, and you were so annoying that Martin Luther King picked a fight with you. Is that really true?

I am not exactly a fawn though for big bad Skip the predator to come after, I may type pretty lousy and leave words out and so on, but there is some ruthless wit between these ears and perhaps Skip the Great is not fullly realizing that. Should he be scared? I would hope not. Am I going to back down? Nah. I am stubborn, I will stand my ground like it was sacred and hopefully he will address this fact in the future. And to think Skip, I thought you seemed like a cool guy, you liking the Chiefs and Jayhawks like me, but apparently your philosophies are etched in stone, so maybe this is falling on deaf ears, or blind eyes. I like Chiefs Planet, a cool place to visit and post things, but if you do not have over a trillion posts, you randomly get punked. Cest La Vie.

Overreact much?

I don't remember what type of a player he was, but I remember when I was a little kid, I had a poster that had Dino, Kevin ross, and Bill Maas, and they were dressed up like the blues brothers, and it said "The Bruise Brothers".

I suggest you go back and look at the date I joined. I think it was before you, n00b. I'm here alot I just don't have as much to say. I was at the star board before this site was created.

Good Lawd. Dino Hackett is classic. So what if he never achieved greatness, he was part of the famous poster "THE TRIBE" which I would give anything to still have....Blame the mom, pretty sure she threw it away.

He played his whole career in a 3-4.

He played left inside LB in 1986 (his rookie year -2nd round draft pick out of Appalacian State). For the next 5 years he played right inside LB, and was named to the Pro-Bowl and second team All Pro in 1988. He finished his career in 1992 in Seattle.

The starting LB lineups for the 6 years he was a starter were as follows going from left to right:

Cooper Hackett Radecic Cofield
Cooper Pearson Hackett Del Rio
Del Rio Pearson Hackett Cofield
Martin Ashley Hackett Thomas
Martin Snow Hackett Thomas
Martin Simean Hackett Thomas

This post brought to you courtesy of The ESPN Pro Fooball Encyclopedia

I remember all of these guys except "Pearson". Who the heck is Pearson?

Dino Hackett was a stud back in the day, he signed a football for me when I was a kid. I remember being in awe of how big he was.

Anyone remember Tito Santana trying out for the Chiefs? Apparently he did before he got into pro wrestling.

I went a little overboard in what I said last night, and I did overreact like it was previously mentioned. If Skip feels the need to pick on n00bs well then I will just take it and then return fire the best I can. By the way, I was a little lit last night so that may be contributing factor to my behavior. Sober as a judge right now. I really liked Dino Hackett, one of favorite Chiefs during his era. The comparsions to Mike Maz are pretty dead on.

Maybe I need to reread what you wrote but I didn't think you really said anything to apologize for. I've witnessed him attack others on many occasions for little or no reason. Some people here deserve to get slap back on occasion.

Anyway, he doesn't know what he's talking about. He called me a n00b when I've been here since they started this place. There are some people on this board that feel entitled to rule over others simply because their post count is higher or they have been a member longer. When people have this entitlement they can usually be hard to deal with.

When old people find a hip new word, they tend to overuse it until it just gets embarrassing.

Hence, "noob" is the cool word on this site for all the senior citizens to use against all newcomers.....I guess they think they're being funny and clever.

It has nothing to do with age. It doesn't matter how old you are. This kind of thing happens with all ages. Your comments about older people says alot about you though.

That's skip's ecological niche in the Chiefsplanet jungle. Some members graze idyllically on the girlie picture thread, some spar and do battle with each other over the attentions of female members, and Skip chases down and kills fawns. It's all part of the circle of life.

Sometimes he misses the n00b when he dodges at the last second (to continue RM's metaphor) and Skip ends up going over the cliff head first. Like most beasts he's not too bright once you push him out of his comfort zone. In Skip's case it's when you make him think deeply.

He's also suspectible to the Jedi Mind trick.

Skip, did they have shotguns?? I don't remember that, I know, it was 19 years ago, but I thought they were just picketing, they had firearms???? WTF. Wouldn't that warrant a visit from KCMO finest? Like I mentioned earlier, I knew about Del Rio and Taylor fighting, in fact, that was on the front page of the KC Times/Star, I think it was the Times. Peace

Yeah, they were carrying shotguns. It caused a moderate stir. Linebackers and nose tackles aren't good about reasoning through the implications of their actions.

YES, they had shotguns. Loaded or not I don't know. It was Del Rio and Hackett for sure and a couple more that I don't remember. As I remember it, Taylor was escorting a scab player into the Chief's offices and Del Rio grabbed him and threw him down. The Chiefs cut Del Rio shortly thereafter. I hate him to this day.
